Throughout my nursing career I have worked with many consultants in both the public and private sectors, I was exceptionally disappointed in the lack of care, compassion and empathy I was shown during my appointment! * He shook the previous patients hand, he did not even offer his hand to me, nor did he introduce himself. * He recorded the whole consultation on his phone without asking for consent. * He didn’t undertake a thorough examination, all he did was ask me to bend and straighten my leg, pushed my knee to see where the pain was. No assessing me walking, rotating nothing. * No assessing my pain, or asking what analgesia I take. * The treatment decision was made on an X-ray which is from 2024, I had to push for him to read my MRI from Oct 2025. Which he only skim read. * Said I need to stop exercising as it doesn’t help, I need to go on monjaro (which is clinically not advised for me with a HBa1C of 26!) for weight loss, and then I need a knee replacement. Also I need to eat less without asking what I eat. * Said arthroscopy would be futile, and the meniscal tear is part of life! Despite not looking at the MRI to see the extent of the tear. I then asked about having my 33mm cyst aspirated which he said he can arrange if I want it. Which I said I do! * I was out in less than 10 mins!!!

I met with my surgeon online. The online facility works extremely well. I noticed that I was sent two new reminders of the meeting on the day with direct links. I like this new approach very much. As always, the surgeon, Prof J Murphy, was prompt and conducted the consultancy with detailed feedback, including the sharing onscreen of a third party report which was extremely helpful and informative. Prof J Murphy has an extremely open, honest and clear approach to discussing aspects of the individual patient’s health that are not easy to discuss. This allows the patient to feel their case is being carefully monitored, considered and options, going forward are shared and discussed with them. This surgeon engenders great trust in his review of information, liaison with others specialists, communication, surgical treatment and overall management of the individual patient’s case.

Mr David Houlihan-Burne

1. Dropped me during surgery. His words. Ulna damage caused palsy, temporary right hand/arm paralysis. Consequent nerve treatment and full body MRI added to stress of convalescence. Still not 100% recovered years later. 2. Double knee replacement took one hour in theatre, rather than much longer as previously advised. 3. Right knee wound opened up when surgeon removed clips. He saw this but did not sew up the consequent gash. Risked infection and never healed like the left knee. 4. Right leg quad snapped after operation, at the new knee. Inoperable and causes weakness and slow walking, plus unsightly. In my opinion this is connected to knee replacement. 5. Left knee hurts daily and restricts walking. Still walk with two sticks years later.

Mr Van Wyk was friendly and easy to talk to . He listened to my problem and made a careful examination and diagnosis. He offered a wait and see strategy rathe than an immediate treatment which I found abit disappointing but how wrong I was! His timely advice avoided me needing surgery because the problem solved itself after a few weeks. I would not hesitate to consult him again or to recommend him highly to others.

Waited about 20min for my appointment with consultant Then during my meeting with him He took a non urgent phone call my appointment that lasted approximately 10-15 mins He discharged me despite me saying I am getting lots of pain that disrupts my sleep and painkillers don’t help! I would have liked to have been referred to physio. But I was not offered it or anything except lift your arm forwards!

I was kept full informed and treated with kindness and respect by all the staff. Mr Bhardwaj saw me on the morning before the operation and again later after it had been completed. Again, I was kept fully informed about my condition.
