About

Dr Wycliffe Mbagaya is a Consultant in Metabolic Medicine. He currently sees private patients at Nuffield Chesterfield Hospital Bristol, Spire Bristol Hospital, and 25 Harley Street, London. He also offers virtual consultations.

Dr Mbagaya trained in general medicine, with receipt of Membership of the Royal College of Physicians. He undertook specialist training in Chemical Pathology and Metabolic Medicine, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists. He is recognised as a Specialist in Laboratory Medicine by the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine.

Dr Mbagaya has extensive experience in Metabolic Medicine. He specialises in the management of diabetes, cholesterol disorders, electrolyte imbalance and inherited metabolic diseases. His background in metabolism, lipidology and diabetes enables him to practise as one of few cardiometabolic medicine specialists in UK. He works closely with named cardiologists and dietitians to provide integrated shared-care of his patients.

Dr Mbagaya manages patients with various metabolic conditions, including unexplained fatigue, trimethylaminuria, and other malodour syndromes. He also regularly advises patients and other doctors on blood test results and their implications. He has special interests in the management of mineral and nutrient deficiencies, such as hypomagnesaemia, phosphate deficiency, iron deficiency, vitamin B12 and vitamin D deficiency.

His metabolic medicine background gives him insight in management of metabolic effects of medications such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, chemotherapy, biologics and immune modulators. He sees patients for metabolic optimisation before surgery, pregnancy and during the recovery phase.

His metabolic medicine practice gives him insight into the investigation and management of metabolic diseases. These conditions may present with complex symptoms, life-long unexplained symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, muscle pain, and ill-health.

In addition to his clinical roles, Dr Mbagaya participates in clinical research. He has been a chief investigator,  principal investigator and sub-investigator in a number of novel cholesterol medications, with some now in practice. He has been an early prescriber of injectable cholesterol medications, GLP-1 agonists and newer medications with cardiometabolic benefit.

Dr Mbagaya is a Clinical Director for Laboratory Medicine at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Trust. Alongside his clinical work, he is a Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol, teaching both students and doctors in training. He also regularly teaches nationwide GP courses on metabolic disorders and laboratory medicine.

Explanation

Dr Mbagaya, has been clear and reactive since our first consultation. He is keen to get to the root of the problem, but does so without the need of unnecessary tests and worry. He listens to my thoughts re the issue and I know I’m in trusted hand to resolve this.

Explanation

Dr Mbagaya was the only person that took the time to find a really complicated diagnose that had been struggling with for over a year. He has called me several times just to see how I am doing without the need of an appointment. He is very knowledgeable and is happy to answer all my questions in all our follow up appointments.
