About Dr Philip Kelly

Dr Kelly trained and graduated in medicine and surgery at The London Hospital Medical College at the University of London. He undertook higher specialist training in Endocrinology, Diabetes and General Internal Medicine at St Bartholomew's and The Royal London Hospitals before taking up Consultant posts at Whipps Cross and Southend Hospitals. Latterly he has been Clinical Director of Acute Medicine at King's College Hospital and is now the Clinical and Academic co-Lead for Medicine and Integrated Care at King's Health Partners. At King's he practices in General and Acute Medicine and maintains an interest in Diabetes, Metabolism and Endocrinology.

He undertook research in Endocrinology at St Bartholomew's Hospital investigating mechanisms of tumour growth in the bowel of patients with acromegaly presenting and defending his thesis for an MD at University of London.

He is Chairman of The London Regional Transfusion Committee and maintains an interest in making transfusion of blood products safer, the management of anaemia including the pre- and post-operative and pre and post-pregnancy optimisation and maintenance of circulatory health.

He enjoys literature and political history and biography, plays tennis, golf, and enjoys skiing and road cycling.

Diseases, Medical Tests and Treatments

  • Thyroid disease - Graves' disease and thyrotoxicosis; hypothyroidism, preparation for pregnancy and managing thyroid dysfunction for conception and through pregnancy; thyroid nodules and multinodular goitre; de Quervain's thyroiditis; thyroid function tests not making sense. I will also work closely with the appropriate thyroid surgeon, should you need to consider or have an operation for your thyroid disease.
  • Menopause - diagnosing and treating the menopause and the menopause transition, with bioidentical HRT if appropriate. This will include the best advice to protect your skeleton and bone density, and reduce your risk of osteoporosis.
  • Adrenal disease - assessment and management of possible and proven adrenal failure, Addison's disease, ACTH deficiency; Cushing's syndrome and Cushing's disease; adrenal tumours; adrenal hypertension - Conn's syndrome, diagnosis and management, phaechromocytoma
  • Pituitary disease - prolactinoma; functioning and non-functioning pituitary tumours, and inflammation, acromegaly; hypothalamic hypogonadism - ovarian and testicular failure; Cushing's disease.
  • Androgen deficiency - primary and secondary testicular failure, maintenance of testosterone therapy, monitoring bone health and haemoglobin.
  • Spermatogenesis induction alongside testicular failure
  • Osteoporosis and osteopaenia - diagnosis, management and surveillance
  • Mineral disturbances - hypocalcaemia and hypercalcaemia; vitamin D deficiency and parathyroid disease and dysfunction; hypomagnesaemia; hyponatraemia and disorders of thirst and of water balance; hypokalaemia and hyperkalaemia.
  • Obesity and overweight, both investigating why and managing, including preparation for surgery.
  • Hypertension - the diagnosis of the cause, particularly Conn's syndrome,  phaechromocytoma, and renal artery stenosis; managing the consequenes of hypertension and reducing cardiovascular risk.
  • Lipid disorders - hypercholesterolaemia, identification and treatment/ including apprpriate clinical referral and cascade testing of familial hypercholesterolaemia; statin intolerance and alternatives to statins and medication; establishment of cardiovascular risk and the need for medication. Metabolic dyslipidaemia, in diabetes, pre-diabetes, insulin resistant states.
  • Hypobetalipoproteinaemia - an underdiagnosed and investigated, though rare, disorder of lipid transport in the context of severe liver steatosis and/or steatohepatitis, out of proportion to what would otherwise be expected; usually associated with characteristic abnormalities on apolipoproteins.
  • Diagnosis and management of iron deficiency anaemia and treatment of heavy periods; use of, avoidance of and alternative to blood transfusions; oral and intravenous iron therapy particuarly in patients intolerant to oral iron.
