Mr Matthew Shaw is a Consultant Urological Surgeon with specialist expertise in minimally invasive urological surgery, bladder dysfunction, prostate disease, kidney stone management, and urinary tract reconstruction. He graduated from University of Oxford (Oriel College) before undertaking a Urology research fellowship at James Whitcomb Riley Children’s Hospital at Indiana University. His doctoral research focused on the development of the obstructed bladder, an area relevant to both adult and paediatric urology.
Mr Shaw completed his specialist urology training in the North East of England and was appointed Consultant Urological Surgeon in 2009. He has contributed to national urological standards and guidance through work with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), including the development of national quality standards for the management of male urinary symptoms. He has also advised on the use of metallic ureteric stents and prostate biopsy techniques used in the diagnosis of prostate cancer.
He has a strong interest in surgical innovation and research and has introduced several minimally invasive procedures to his region, including HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) and Rezūm water vapour therapy for benign prostate enlargement. His academic work includes numerous international publications and presentations relating to obstructed bladder development, stone surgery, and ureteric stricture management. He is also Principal Investigator for the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR)-sponsored PETS trial, which investigates factors affecting thromboembolism in surgical patients.
Mr Shaw also practises at Wansbeck General Hospital, where he manages a broad range of urological conditions affecting both men and women, including bladder problems, benign and malignant prostate disease, penile and scrotal conditions, kidney stones, and urinary incontinence.
