Mr Jonathan Barclay

Dr Jonathan Barclay is a highly skilled Consultant Urological Surgeon who specialises with a dual sub-specialty interest in functional and reconstructive urology, and andrology. His main fields of interest include urinary incontinence in men and women, recurrent UTIs, lower urinary tract symptoms including painful bladder syndrome and Ketamine cystitis, sacral neuromodulation, urodynamic urology, erectile dysfunction, urethral stricture disease and penile curvature. 

Dr Barclay graduated from Newcastle University Medical School with merit in 2009. He then undertook his foundation training and completed his core surgery training. In 2015, he was appointed to the higher surgical training programme in Urology. He was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Urology, FRCS (Urol), in 2020, and achieved his Certificate of Completion of Training in 2021.

Dr Barclay has been a Consultant Urologist since February 2021, initially taking up a post at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesborough, before then moving to the Freeman Hospital in October 2022. At James Cook University Hospital he specialised in functional, reconstructive and neurourology, including looking after patients with spinal cord injuries at the Golden Jubilee regional spinal injuries unit. Alongside another colleague he re-kindled the sacral neuromodulation service across Teesside, and was the Advice and Guidance lead for primary care.

Since moving to the Freeman hospital he has continued with his functional and reconstructive sub-specialty, but had also completed a mentorship in Andrological surgery. He regularly takes part in the Urodynamics and Andrology MDTs. He offers a wide range of procedures for troublesome bladder issues, including sacral nerve stimulation, where he is one of the highest volume implanting surgeons in Europe. He offers both endoscopic and open urethral stricture surgery, and is experienced in prosthetic urology, including penile implants for erectile dysfunction, and artificial urinary sphincter insertion for stress incontinence .
