Mr Shanmugasundaram Rajkumar

Mr Rajkumar is a practising Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics based at Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley since 2019 after working as NHS consultant for 5 years in Northern Ireland and in England since 2010. He has over 15 years consultant experience and expertise in performing hip /knee joint replacements and knee arthroscopic surgery including complex joint surgeries with excellent outcomes.

He graduated from the University of Madras, India in 1992 and underwent post-graduate training in orthopaedics in both Madras and the UK leading to FRCS-Trauma & Orthopaedics degree. He completed a fellowship in lower limb arthroplasty surgery (primary/revision) and ACLR/knee arthroscopic surgery in Reading, UK. Subsequently, he started working as a consultant in trauma and orthopaedics in hospitals in England including Wrightington Hospital (Centre of Excellence for joint replacement surgery) and Northern Ireland before moving over to Scotland.

Mr Rajkumar has published both trauma and orthopaedic related papers in peer review journals(13 publications) and is a reviewer for a number of orthopaedic journals including JBJS (BJJ) and Bone & Joint Research journal. He is a Consulting Editor for 3 peer-reviewed international journals.

He has widely presented in national and international orthopaedic conferences and meetings and has been invited frequently to lecture and examine for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students. He is a faculty member for Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons, Glasgow for Training and Development and currently Examiner for FRCS-T&O examination.

He has been appointed as Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Glasgow University in 2020 and Regional Surgical Advisor for Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons, Glasgow.  He has recently been appointed as MBChB Advisor for medical studies at Glasgow University.

Research interests: setting up an RCT study and contributing to multi-centre trials in UK and Europe. Recently he took part in a Qualitative study on shared decision making in major surgery conducted by Oxford University funded by National Institute for Health Research(NIHR). His current interests are quality improvement in elective orthopaedic surgery, setting up guidelines and high risk assessment clinics for elective surgery and improving orthopaedic teaching and training.

Mr. Rajkumar performs hip and knee replacement surgeries including hip revision surgery using 100% ODEP 10A rated implants and offers treatments such as knee cartilage preservation and menisceal surgery.
