I was referred to the Horder Centre for hip surgery as an NHS patient and the difference between that experience and my experiences in NHS hospitals couldn't have been more different. As it turned out, I also had two brief stays in an NHS hospital at around the same time, and experiencing a busy trauma ward in the Royal Victoria hospital in Brighton was pretty terrible. Unusually, I ended up having to have two operations in Crowborough on the same hip, so I was there for several days in all, and though no one really wants to be in hospital they do make every effort to make your stay as comfortable as possible. You get a single room with a TV (Freeview) and your own en-suite bathroom and fresh towels are brought every day. For a start, the staffing levels were brilliant. Someone was always on hand if I needed pain relief or anything else for that mattter. For every staff shiftI was allocated a care worker and a nurse, all of whom were absolutely lovely. They will help you with anything including a bed-wash or shower and if you have any questions they can't answer themselves they will find someone who can. I was regularly offered pain medication and if I felt I needed some in between rounds I had only to ring the bell beside my bed and I was usually able to have it. The food is good and plentiful and the menu choices provide plenty of variety. The staff who bring round the food as well as a trolley offering hot drinks or fruit juice are cheerful and friendly as well as punctual. Even the housekeeping staff were lovely. Although I'm sure all the staff were busy (for example, the care assistants take care of 6 patients on each shift), no one ever seemed to be under too much pressure and they always had time for a chat. They will arrange transport two and from the hospital if you need it, whether in an ambulance or by car, and even the drivers love working there. Some of the staff I met have worked there for many years, which speaks for itself. If I were referred to the Horder Centre rather than an NHS hospital or further surgery at any point I would feel confident that I would be well taken care of.

I had to visit the Vermilion Endodontic Team after my dentist discovered that I needed specialist root canal treatment on not one, but two teeth. My initial reaction was sheer panic, especially since I'm not the biggest fan of going to the dentist. However, my overall experience at Vermilion was nothing short of amazing – so much so that I actually began looking forward to my visits! David Treagus and Megan were incredibly welcoming, and I could tell David immediately recognized the fear on my face. Both of them were quick to put me at ease. During my initial appointment, David took the time to walk me through the entire process. He explained exactly what he was going to do, the expected outcomes, and even the potential risks involved. When it came to my first root canal session, I was absolutely terrified – to say I was "bricking it" would be an understatement. However, David reassured me that we would go at a pace I was comfortable with, and that if I needed a break at any point, I just had to give him a wave. Root canal treatment is a lengthy process, so I had several two-hour appointments over the course of about 12 weeks. By my second appointment, because the experience had been so pleasant, I was, for the first time in my life, actually looking forward to going to the dentist. Fast forward to the end of my 12 weeks, and my teeth are looking and feeling great again! I can't thank David and Megan enough for the incredible work they did. I'm now able to smile again without any pain or discomfort. While I understand that visiting a specialist comes at a cost, I can honestly say I am so glad I chose Vermilion. The entire team, from the front of house to the specialists, is amazing and truly understanding. No matter what, they will make you feel calm, cared for, and well looked after.

My appointment with Dr Madrigal was a breath of fresh air! I've seen more than my fair share of specialists due to complex chronic illness, and I can confidently say that Dr Madrigal is one of the best doctors I have ever seen. I came to him with the hope that he may be able to unpack a suspected misdiagnosis that has weighed on me for 9 years, significantly impacting my quality of life both in the uncontrolled symptoms and management strategies. Safe to say, he exceeded my expectations. He patiently listened, asked clear and thoughtful questions, and exuded a warmth with genuine care and concern (a trait that is sadly not as common as you'd hope among doctors, at least in my experience). He explained the misdiagnosis clearly, what he thinks I may be experiencing instead, and how we can move forward to diagnose / treat it. I didn't feel rushed at all, and it was abundantly clear he wanted to do his best to help me. That care extended to his clinic letter too. Dr Madrigal's letter was easily the best clinic letter I've had from any consultant. Even for bits I found myself struggling to articulate in the appointment, he somehow managed to make sense of it and report it accurately - proving just how deeply he listened to me. His admin team are also amazing, even checking in to make sure I knew what to do next. I truly left that appointment more hopeful than I've felt in YEARS: like I finally may be on the right path to get my life back. All because a highly knowledgeable and kind consultant took the time to compassionately listen. Overall, I would highly recommend Dr Madrigal to everyone I can, and I feel blessed that I was able to see him.

I very highly recommend Mr. Abhinav. After an MRI, I was diagnosed with a Macroadenoma in my pituitary gland. While Mr Abhinav is clearly a fantastic surgeon, the highest praise I can give him is that I felt very well looked after, especially preceding the surgery where there was some difficulties between my insurance company and the hospital. Mr Abhinav and his team were very good at keeping me informed (a big thank you to Michelle who has been fantastic throughout) and at a point where everything looked to have stalled, managed to be firm and ensure the surgery went ahead as scheduled. The surgery itself was a success and the rehab went as smoothly as it possibly could and I have now been discharged with the tumour fully removed. On what is a stressful experience to go through, I don't think I could have been in better hands.

Mr Kam Balaggan

I was treated by Mr Balaggan following a routine eye examination which highlighted a bleed at the back of my eye. Following tests, he diagnosed Central Retinal Vein Occlusion, related to macular oedema, which requires ongoing Eylea eye injections. I was panicked about the injections, but he put me at ease with his calm confidence and gentle manner. He clearly explains conditions and procedures and takes time to answer all questions. I have received 4 injections so far: all have gone smoothly. My eyesight has improved dramatically, thanks to his expertise. Mr Balaggan is highly professional, knowledgeable and thorough.. According to the nurses in the ophthalmology department, Mr Balaggan is top of his field and fabulous to work with.

From the moment I arrived I was made to feel welcome and all the staff were pleasant and appeared to be enjoying their roles. The room was excellent and everything that I was told happened accordingly. Mr Nicholl came to my room within the first ten minutes to explain all the details of the procedure and thereafter I was treated quickly and efficiently in a very friendly manner. After the operation I was given clear instructions as to the aftercare and provided with a lovely cup of tea and a sandwich in my room before my wife came to collect me. All in all it was an experience that I would recommend to anyone requiring similar treatment to me. Thank you to Mr Nicholl and all the staff at the Nuffield.

Although the staff were amazing I found the actual cataract operation deeply unpleasant. I could see everything that was being done whilst being unable to move - the real stuff of nightmares, though the actual operation was a complete success. If I may suggest a way to make this experience a little more bearable would be to enable patients to choose their own music to listen to? As a professional singing practitioner, I'm aware how effective music can be in distraction? (I personally found the choice of radio station and programme increased the unpleasantness of the experience)

Steven is an excellent and empathetic therapist. After having several bad experiences with other therapists I met Steven and immediately felt at ease. Steven listens and is non judgemental. When I first started working with him earlier in the year following a traumatic car crash, I thought I would never drive again. Using EMDR therapy, it has taken hard work but I am now back to driving for which I will forever be grateful. I hope this gives hope to anyone in a similar scenario, and encourages you to reach out for help.
