Ear pinning surgery (Pinnaplasty)

Pinnaplasty is an ear pinning surgery that a person may choose to get in order to change the shape and size of their ears, or to pin them back.

A person may get their ears pinned back due to the impact that they have on their self confidence.  Some people may also choose for their children to receive pinnaplasties if they find that they feel self conscious about how their ears look.

Different types of pinnaplasty techniques

There are several pinnaplasty techniques that can be used. These include:

Traditional pinnaplasty

During a traditional pinnaplasty, you will typically be under general anaesthesia. During most pinnaplasties, a small incision is made behind each ear. The cartilage is then reconstructed. This may involve it being folded, reshaped or parts of it being removed. Stitches are then used to keep the ears in the new position, with the ears then bandaged tightly. This operation usually takes 45 minutes per ear.

‘Incisionless’ pinnaplasty

In some circumstances, an external cut or incision doesn’t need to be made during a pinnaplasty. Instead, tiny needles can be utilised to pierce through the skin into the ear cartilage. Stitches are then used to hold the ears within their new positions. This is often most suitable for children, as a result of them having softer cartilage. The benefits of this form of ear pinning surgery includes a short operation, no incisions or cuts, fewer complications and often, a quicker and easier recovery.

Earfold™ pinnaplasty

This new surgical technique is where the surgeon places an implant into the front of each ear in order to cause them to naturally bend backwards. This can be performed under local anaesthetic. It is also a quicker procedure, taking around 15 minutes for each ear, with no need for a head bandage. It can also lead to more precise results and a quicker recovery time.

When sitting down for a consultation with your surgeon, you will be able to discuss the options that are available to you. With a good understanding of your medical history, circumstances, symptoms and any concerns that you have, they will be able to advise on the most suitable procedure for you.

During your consultation, they may also require that you take further tests before the surgery. They are likely to take photographs before your operation too.

Pinnaplasty recovery

After ear pinning surgery, you will be monitored closely and in most circumstances you will be able to go home on the same day in order to rest and recuperate.

In the few days after the procedure, the dressing around your head will be kept tight in order to maintain the new position of your ears. It is also kept this way to prevent certain complications including blood clots. At this time, you will typically feel sore  and tender, but you shouldn’t be in significant pain. You may also experience slight bruising, numbness and tingling in your ears for the first few weeks after your pinnaplasty.

While at home, it is important to continue to follow the post-operative plan given to you by your surgeon. This will typically include keeping your head bandage on and keeping your ear dry during the first fortnight. They will also provide you with advice on when to return to school or work as well as recommendations on when to begin your usual day-to-day activities once again.
