Ben Grey is a Consultant Urological Surgeon working privately as part of Manchester Urology LLP. His NHS practice is at Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), working at Manchester Royal Infirmary and the Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital. He is also Honorary Professor at the University of Salford and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester. Ben is proud to have been awarded the prestigious British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) John Anderson Award in 2015 which recognises an individual who has contributed to urology in an outstanding or inspirational way.
Ben practices all components of general urology but he has subspecialty interests in urinary tract stone management (kidney stones, ureteric stones and bladder stones). He is always keen to learn new techniques that can benefit his patients and has performed 'UK-first' procedures, on a couple of occasions. As part of Manchester Urology, he offers the full range of therapeutic options for stone disease privately including minimally invasive endourology techniques such as ureteroscopy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and shockwave lithotripsy as well as strategies to reduce the risk of further stone formation. He leads the complex stone service and stone multidisciplinary team (MDT) at MRI/MFT and sees patients from across NW England.
He graduated from the University of Manchester and undertook higher surgical training in Manchester and the North West. He has gained further specialist experience at the Cleveland Clinic in the USA and at stone centres in Amsterdam and Turin. An active researcher, with over 30 publications and book chapters to date, he received his research doctorate (MD) from the University of Manchester after an intensive study of prostate stem cell biology at the Christie Hospital.
He is also a qualified educator (PGCert Distinction) and has previously been Training Programme Director for Urology in Manchester with overall responsibility for the quality of trainee urologists' education in the region. Ben is an invited faculty member on numerous UK instructional courses and has lectured internationally on the management of stone disease. He has been deemed a global key opinion leader for two large companies providing endourological equipment.
Ben recognises the importance of audit and submits his data to the various kidney stone-related BAUS audits (https://www.baus.org.uk/patients/surgical_outcomes/pcnl/surgeon.aspx?id=1421). His current research interests focus on service improvement (patient safety/satisfaction and efficiency), with the ultimate aim of maximising patients' experience.
Ben enjoys spending time with his wife watching their children grow up. His playing days are now over but he enjoys watching both rugby and football games and exercises playing squash and running. In 2025 he completed the London Marathon for the NSPCC.

My visit was well organised And efficient The staff Were all Polite and knowledgeable
Saw Ben in a last minute panic after a problematic ultrasound scan. He had the most wonderful bedside manner. Absolutely the doctor you would want to see with any kidney issues. Felt like I was in the safest hands in The Alexandra Hospital.
Professor Grey provided professional and efficient service throughout. He listened carefully, offered clear and concise explanations and advice, and communicated in a kind and empathetic manner. Most important of all, he absolutely put my mind at rest. Many thanks. Would highly recommend.
Very friendly, I immediately felt at ease and it was great to be listened to. Professor Grey knew exactly what I needed and spoke to the relevant people to help me resolve my issue.
Professor Grey has a lovely welcoming smile which immediately puts you at ease. His explanations were very clear and understandable. It was very nice meeting him.
Professor Ben Grey has taken very good care of me before, during and after my surgeries over a 2 year span. I first met him when I was pregnant and had a nephrostomy due to kidney stones. I was anxious at the time and he was very compassionate, truly went above and beyond the level of care I was expecting. He’s always pleasant, approachable and professional, he would answer my questions and explain everything to do with my care very well. I went to A&E a number of times during this period and even the other urologists would speak highly of him when I would tell them I’m his patient. I’m stone and nephrostomy free thanks to professor Grey, I genuinely could not have asked for anyone better.
I have benefited from several meetings with Prof Ben Grey over the last few years, most lately for a flexible cystoscopy. His execution of that procedure was of the highest professional order, as was our subsequent meeting to discuss the consequences of that procedure. I have some medical issues outside urology and Prof Grey's post-cystoscopy meeting was outstandingly helpful, explaining the immediate findings very clearly (with diagrams) but also placing the findings in the context of my wider health issues. I have no hesitation in recommending Prof Grey to fellow patients in his urology specialities.
I was an extremely nervous and anxious patient but Professor Grey made me feel at ease from the first telephone consultation to my last medical procedure. He listened to my concerns and made sure I knew what was happening at each stage. My options were explained clearly as the kidney issue I had was not straightforward. I would not hesitate to recommend him.
An excellent consultation very informative and helped me understand my health issues clearly.
Great surgeon and colleague i would highly recommend
