Being born with congenital ptosis I had a few surgeries as a youngster having major surgery at 13 using donor tissue, this went a long way to correcting the issue. In 2007 I attended the old Manchester Eye hospital to have revision surgery carried out, unfortunately due to no notes from my earlier childhood and myself not knowing what had been done due to my young age, the surgeon at the time was surprised to find what had been carried out previously while I was on the operating table and was unable to proceed with the intended surgery. He did do some cosmetic work to improve the look but advised they would not be able to do anything further due to the amount of scar tissue from previous surgeries. 28 years later my GP referred me and I had a consultation and was told revision work could be done. I very quickly received a date for surgery which was carried out by Mr Dharmasena on the 20th October. On the day of surgery although I thought I felt fine my previous experiences came to the surface and I had a lot of anxiety with a fear of the past repeating itself. Mr Dharmasena came to see me and was the absolute voice of reassurance I needed to hear. Calm, patient & reassuring. At 58 years old with quite a few surgical procedures under my belt I can not rate his bedside manner more highly. He put me totally at ease, told me not to worry, that was his job I just had to relax and 'enjoy the ride' which made me smile. He told me his aim was to make my eye look as perfect as possible and I can honestly say he has achieved it. He has that quite confidence of a person who knows their job and and is extremely good at what they do. He had no doubts that he wouldn't be able to do what he intended to do and that is exactly what i needed to hear. The surgery went perfectly and I was chatting and talking while Mr Dharmasena finished off the stitches. I was discharged the same day and he popped to see me before I left making sure I knew what to do with the medication. I expected to wake up the following morning feeling quite sore and tender but I had absolutely no pain which is a testament to the care Mr Dharmasena takes during surgery. Apart from swelling and bruising which you would naturally expect the whole experience has been really positive and I would highly recommend his skills as an eye surgeon. In this day and age of fast paced life and everything and everyone feeling rushed I felt valued and cared for by someone who takes great pride in their work and wants the best for you. I am extremely happy with the results so far despite only being 10 days post surgery and will be returning in a couple of weeks to have the stitches removed. I feel extremely lucky to have had Mr Dharmasena as my surgeon and would have no hesitation recommending him to anyone or having to have further surgery with him if ever necessary. A real gentleman.

Early January 2024, I was diagnosed with Squamous carcinoma in my neck and I had gone through a radiotherapy / chemotherapy treatment and recovered well by mid 2024. A year and a few months later, I discovered something in my upper left jaw and with biopsy, it’s confirmed to be cancer again. I searched for a Maxillofacial surgeon and several of my friends and doctors recommended Dr. Mustansir Alibhai as one of the best in this area. I went to see him and from day one I saw how he is kind and taking good care of his patients. Within a week, he did all required scans and tests and booked the surgery. The surgery was so complicated because of my previous radiotherapy treatment. The surgery took about 14 hours, almost double the normal time, and Dr. Alibhai along with his team had to deal with several complications during the surgery. He dealt with these complications in a very professional way as I heard from his colleagues after the surgery. I think that Allah gave me a new opportunity in this day to come back to life through the help of Dr. Alibhai. After the surgery, I saw a caring person who was taking care of all the details along with his team. I spent 6 days at intensive care and then another 5 days at a normal room. During this period, Dr. Alibhai and his team took very good care of me. The results of the surgery were superb. The pathology report mentioned the success of the surgery in fully removing the tumor with a very good margin. Therefore, my oncologist along with Dr. Alibhai and the team decided that there is no need for further radiotherapy treatment, given the fact that I already had radiotherapy before. The recovery process is a little long because of the sophisticated surgery in my mouth and my leg. I can’t tell you enough about how careful and kind Dr. Alibhai is in following up with me and managing the recovery process in the best possible way to make sure that I return to my normal situation and normal life in due time. He is a real human before being a doctor and this is what makes the difference. I highly recommend Dr. Alibhai for similar cases and I am quite sure he will do a great job. I wish him all the best in his career and his life.

I recently visited Mr Arun at Shirley Oaks hospital due to occasional bleeding when I went to the loo. He reviewed my diet, general health and discussed details regarding any habits that I had regarding ‘toilet techniques’. My Arun then gave me some helpful tips on what I might need to address to rectify and bad habits that may have been causing the bleeeing. All discussions were very helpful and not at all intimidating. He almost instantly set my mind at ease. Whilst explaining that from our discussion , he was reasonably sure that he knew I had a case of aggravated haemorrhoids, he thought it would be prudent to book and carry out a colonoscopy. Again, whilst I was very nervous about this process, Mr Arun’s manner made me feel far more comfortable than I had expected and the process was not nearly as bad as I had expected! Mr Arun gave me a positive review within 30 minutes of the colonoscopy. I then saw and Arun 3 weeks later and he ran through the findings which were all positive and explained that the new behaviours that he had explained to me were working and that I should maintain them. The experience was excellent and Mr Arun was warm, friendly, informative and helpful.

I had my shoulder replacement there and spent 2 nights as well (Thurs and Fri). The nursing staff and health assistants were brilliant and attentive, which I really appreciated. My only complaint is about the food staff/team, and to some degree the food itself. The food is just above ok, clearly institutional, but not with a lot of awareness of how a patient may need to handle or access the food. This may be because most of the overnight patients are there for knee or hip surgery. I don't know. But with a shoulder replacement, I can't cut anything (I tried to order things I could pick up or stab) but things like I could barely get the cling wrap off the plates so I could actually access the food were disappointing. There were times I had to eat with my one good hand, no utensil. At no point did any of the food staff notice or do anything like offer to take the cling film off for me, etc. Very perfunctory and in light of the other care received there, really stood out as lacking.

I came to see Mr Laniado as a 65 year old with a history of regular urine infections leading to complete retention. My prostate was very enlarged. I was getting up to urinate every night 5 or 6 times. I had a weak urine flow, with a regular troublesome urgent need to pee in the daytime. Mr Laniado was kind and informative. We discussed the options and agreed on HoLEP. I preferred an epidural to a general anaesthetic which was appropriate for me. The whole procedure was pain free and completed very professionally. I was informed of what post operative issues were common. These were fairly minor and cleared up quickly. Thanks to Mr Laniado’s skills, 2 months on I get up only once a night and have no urgent immediate need to pee in the daytime. My urine flow is now like it was 40 years ago. I have had no urinary incontinence, and suffered no change to sexual function. I cannot thank him enough as this has been genuinely life changing for me.

I would like to make mention of the pre-operative theatre experience. The anaetheatist and his ODP colleague were welcoming and made every effort to put me at ease. It was explained that I may hear noises during the surgery and was offered an extra level of anaesthesia which would ensure I would sleep throughout the procedure. Ther was a decernable rapport between the whole team.
