I had the misfortune of seeing Dr Mark Gillett recently for a shoulder complaint. I had been in pain on and off for several months, and felt somewhat frightened about the prospect of being unable to resolve the issue, or having to resort to surgery. At my first appointment, Dr Gillett performed a cursory physical examination, asked me very few questions about the course of my treatment to date and seemed keen to get me out of the door as quickly as possible. His recommendation for an injection was made within about five minutes, and he provided very little explanation as to why. After an MRI scan I returned for a follow up appointment. Once more I found Dr Gillett to be rude and unsympathetic. I was eager to understand the nature of my MRI results and the course of treatment that Dr Gillett was recommending, but he seemed to treat my questions as an affront to his medical expertise. Far from assuaging my fears or clarifying my understanding, he treated my enquiries as if they were a nuisance. When I explained that I still do not understand what was actually wrong and why he was suggesting an injection, he became increasingly obnoxious, suggesting that I should simply accept his 'twenty five years of experience' and telling me that I had a very 'rigid' view of my treatment. I tried explaining again that I was simply trying to understand the course of action, and again was rebuffed curtly. I found his behaviour throughout deeply unsatisfactory, and he only added to my distress managing what is already a challenging and painful injury. I will not return to see him again and I will not recommend that anyone else does.

I remember when I forgot my appointment time, he called me and said please do you know you have an appointment today and left late that day just to see me. After the first right eye cataract removal Mazen Tahhan gave me his telephone number and said to call him if I had a problem. I am a very keen insect photographer and found with the distance lens I could not see the camera screen clearly. I became worried about the impact on my ability to focus close up on insects. About 8 p.m. I sent him a text briefly outlining my concerns . He called me back immediately and listened carefully. I was even considering other options than the NHS lens and he kindly sent details of these. However he advised me to I stay with a close-up NHS lens to get as much light into the eye as possible. I followed his advice and am very pleased and very satisfied with the result. Sabina George

All staff, including the receptionist, were very nice and helpful. The hospital waiting areas and the consulting room were very clean and well maintained. There were unlimited free hot drinks and water available for waiting patients. Whilst the hospital does not have a car park, there was plenty of on-street parking available (charges varying up to £6.50 for 4 hours - enforced until 8pm), even on a busy Friday traffic wise after 4pm, when I arrived.

Afterward, I inquired if I could still attend in person, and he graciously permitted me to do so. The whole experience was very easy, everything was explained before it happened, there were plenty of opportunities to ask questions, and the whole set up was efficient, friendly and spotlessly clean. I was nervous upon arrival and was quickly put at ease by everyone's professionalism and bedside manner. There is free underground parking, plenty of accessible toilets, large waiting areas, drinks machines and reading materials. The facilities are clean and well kept, with plenty of signage around the building.
