    Newmedica Newcastle

    Ophthalmology

I was referred to Newmedica Newcastle for eye cataract surgery by my optician. I had my first eye surgery done in September, and my second eye done in December. I received excellent service from all the Newmedica colleagues whenever I visited; for my pre-surgery consultation, the surgeries themselves, and the post-surgery visits. Those working on the reception were friendly and made me feel welcome. The waiting area was clean and tidy, with hot drinks available. The colleagues who did the testing, pre-surgery administration, and post-surgery follow up checks were all very knowledgeable. They took me through the surgery preparations, explaining the process as they went, putting me at ease and answering any questions. After surgery they made sure I was aware of what I needed to do over the following three weeks to ensure my eyes healed completely. The surgical team were very proficient, and I felt I was in safe hands. The procedure was explained at every step, putting me at ease. The consultant for my first procedure was Nicholas Wride. The procedure itself took just under 3 minutes, which I had not expected, as internet searches indicated it would take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. I was so impressed and, as I was told I could have the same consultant for the cataract removal procedure on my second eye, I didn’t hesitate to ask for Nicholas Wride again. My second procedure was equally as expertly performed, and this time took 3 minutes 20 seconds. There was no pain during the procedures and only very slight discomfort straight afterwards. Other than the pain relief eye drops that were put in for the surgical procedure, I didn’t need to take any painkillers at all. The hardest part for me was remembering to use the post-surgery eye drops the clinic provided, as my eyes felt that good. Three weeks after surgery, I attended the clinic for post-surgery follow up checks. I was signed off from the clinic after the follow up check on my second eye. My vision is now excellent, and I only need to use reading glasses for small print. Before the surgery I wore varifocal lens glasses at all times. I wasn’t expecting the improvements in my sight to be quite so good, so I’m pleased I took up the opportunity to have my cataracts removed and really pleased that it was Newmedica Newcastle who did the procedures and looked after me and my sight so well. Thank you Newmedica!

I waited over an hour to be seen for my pre admission appointment. After being admitted and been shown to my room I was left for 5 hours in a cold room without anyone checking on me or giving me information about when my operation would be. Staff only turned up when I called and was then able to get some water as I was then advised that my operation was being delayed for a few hours. Short staffed. Slow to respond to buzzer calls. Staff always seemed to be busy doing something else other than looking after patients. Quite noisy ward during the day with people’s loud voices/laughing. Outdated facilities, no overhead bed light so had to have the main big room lights on all the time, which I could not control. I was moved to a different room after my operation as the first one did not have sufficient heating. The en-suite bathrooms are very outdated. Very short shower hose. In my second room there were 2 Rentokill boxes in shower. 50% of staff were friendly. I had major abdominal surgery. My night nurse was very compassionate and took very good care of me for 2 nights. I was discharged with the insufficient amount of painkillers to take home and without a physio assessment or much information about what symptoms to look out for and how to help recovery. I had to contact my own GP to get enough painkillers. Once discharged I had to walk with my husband all the way to the car at the pickup parking as there was no porter or wheelchair available. I had given 1h notice and then let her know again 10minutes before my husband arrived to collect me.

Admin efficiency Things didn't get off to a great start when there seemed to be an issue regarding what my insurance would cover, even though I had received two confirmations from the insurer over the phone and one confirmation by email. I felt a bit like a criminal and that I was lying about the treatment being covered. In the end, the insurer had to phone Practice Plus direct to sort it out, because no-one would believe that I was telling the truth. I've never come across this problem before at the Spire or the Nuffield. Usually the admin trail works very smoothly. Cleanliness The carpet in the waiting area is dirty and is covered in tea/coffee stains. There were pubic hairs on the toilet seat in one of the toilets by the waiting area. Not great at all. Waiting Time I am a private patient and I usually use the Spire in Bristol or the Nuffield, which run to time. My appointment for an injection was 30minutes late. Unacceptable. Staff To be fair, some of the staff are lovely. But some of the staff are downright rude. When I went to speak to one of the receptionists after waiting for my appointment for over 20minutes, I simply asked to check that I was on the system. The answer "yes". Oh I said, it's just that I haven't been called yet. Is there a delay? The answer "yes" - and a roll of the eyes to say "yes and your problem with that is??" I have to have another appointment at some point, so let's hope that my next experience is better.

Prof Field carries out a high volume of hip replacements annually, which, along with his research and other interests, gives him the breadth of experience and insight to be able to advise you in terms of treatment options and capability. I am so thankful for his advice to have both hips done together, he took away any anxiety I had and has significantly reduced the total impact of bilateral hip surgery in terms of down time. He is an exponent of the anterior approach and my personal experience has been, that with an independent local physiotherapist, at 3w post op, I was about a week ahead of where she expected me to be in terms of exercise capability, and any pain I’ve experienced has been very manageable. So quite a smooth recovery. Prof Field is a totally dedicated professional, who has personally kept in touch with me before surgery, after surgery at the hospital, and also after discharge, to check progress and give helpful advice. I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending Prof Field.

There are not enough words to express how grateful we are for Marta. After two difficult and traumatic previous birth experiences, it made an enormous difference to have a doctor who listened so carefully, understood our concerns, and supported us so thoughtfully throughout this third pregnancy. Her calm, steady approach helped make the entire experience feel reassuring and positive, including the birth itself. At 20 weeks, Marta identified a serious issue with the pregnancy and acted quickly and calmly to ensure it could continue safely. We truly believe we might have lost our baby had she not recognised it when she did. Marta cared not only for the wellbeing of the pregnancy, but also for both mum and baby, always with a deeply humane and compassionate approach. She is an exceptional doctor, and we could not recommend her highly enough. Thank you for everything, Marta

From my initial conversation relaying the advantages of undergoing a knee replacement, but also the implications of surgery, to date at the 6week consultation, I have found Mr Bonshahi to be very straight forward speaking which is very refreshing. He has relayed information in every explicit detail. My confidence in undergoing this procedure was at no time wavered, the reasurances given surounding the entire procedure and visit completly relaxed my spirits. He is without doubt, the most outstanding orthopaedic surgeon and must be so proud and pleased to work in such a wonderful environment as the Highfield Hospital surrounded by the excellence of his support staff. I cannot express my gratitude, thanks and appreciation to both Mr Bonshahi, his staff, every single person at the Highfield Hospital and the NHS

My first visit was a very positive experience. The clinic was well presented, and I felt comfortable sitting in the waiting area prior to being called in. All staff members were polite, kind, and respectful during every interaction. When I entered the consultation room, I initially felt nervous; however, this quickly melted away as I was put at ease through warm and engaging conversation. I felt treated as a human being, not just a patient. The doctor ensured I was comfortable throughout the consultation and explained everything clearly and thoroughly. I am genuinely pleased with the outcome of the appointment, as I now have a better understanding of what is happening with my body and feel empowered to seek further support to improve my health and wellbeing. Once again Thank you!.🥰

On my last visit, there was a welcoming face at the desk who immediately greeted me. The place was clean and warm, and it was lovely to see the residents walking about and engaging with the staff and me. Banksfield has always been an extremely welcoming home. The staff are always friendly and approachable. The home is clean and warm, and my mother's needs are always met. The management is easy to approach and speak with about any issues or concerns. They have dealt with recent difficult events with an extreme professional manner, and have reinforced my belief that my mother is in the right place, receiving the right care. I trust their judgement and feel there is a strong partnership between the staff and me to ensure my mother's every need is met.

I had three recent hip operations with Mr Thomas White. I was awake under spinal anaesthetic and felt completely safe from the start, as it was clear he was very much in control in the operating theatre. His calm confidence and steady manner put me at ease, especially as I was dealing with a huge personal loss and felt very vulnerable. I am now pain free after suffering from severe debilitating osteoarthritis for many years. He is a brilliant surgeon and I would not hesitate to see him again. I would also wholeheartedly recommend him to my family and friends if the need arises. I will always be grateful for his dedication and everything he has done for me. He has changed my life.

I have been using Monica for facial aesthetics for just over a year now and cannot recommend highly enough. In fact I live approximately two hours away so whilst it is not the most convenient practice for me, the confidence I have in Monica supersedes the inconvenience of the journey. More recently I sought Monica's assistance in the removal of a facial Walt like growth that I had been conscious of for over twenty years. I was very nervous but didn't need to be. It was a completely painless affair that was over in maybe five minutes. Very much looking forward to the healed result and know that it was only my confidence in Monica that enabled me to finally opt for removal

Before our consultation, it was evident that he had thoroughly familiarised himself with my file. He was incredibly personable and took the time to listen carefully to my concerns about ‘next steps’. He explained everything clearly and simply, never rushing me. I left the hospital feeling very happy with my choice of consultant.

The combination of therapies under one roof is Castle Craig's strong point and a great team of staff, all really friendly and helpful. I was here for six weeks and the intensive therapy schedule has been extremely beneficial for me. Family therapy was helpful and I'm working hard to mend the relationships in my family. The fitness sessions were a highlight, the staff got me moving and thinking about healthy living after years of alcohol abuse.

I think the Doctors Lounge is such a great personal investment. You are able to see a doctor quickly, they have all your notes in front of them and have excellent referal doctors should you need further support. I cannot recomend Dr. Nik Chopra and his team more highly. It also means you take pressure off your local GP who can then spend their time with patients who need to use the NHS service. Think outstanding service and value for money.

He and his team were highly efficient in planning and performing my hysteroscopy, and its impact was undeniable, as I joked that I felt human again afterwards. Thank you.

my physio therapist was most helpful. I have been seeing him about once every 2 months. He always asks about my progress from the last visit and we then work on the areas that I pick out. This time he showed me various exercises relevant to my current situation. I did the exercises with his supervisio0n and I found that most valuable as he could show me what I got ok and how I could do the exercise better
