The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH), located in Stanmore, is the number one orthopaedic hospital in the UK as well as the largest. We are regarded as a leader in the field of orthopaedics both in the UK and worldwide, providing specialist orthopaedic care to babies, children and adults.
The hospital, founded in 1905, has a rich history that includes being an emergency hospital for the military during the First World War.
We offer a broad range of neuro-musculoskeletal care, carried out by a team of expert consultants, physicians and surgeons. The care offered includes: hip, knee, foot and ankle replacements and treatments, limb reconstruction, pain management, neurosurgery and spine treatments (scoliosis is a particular area of interest to many of our spine consultants and is carried out almost daily here). Examples of some of the procedures carried out include: total hip replacements, cartilage repair surgery, neuromodulation for chronic pain and musculoskeletal rehabilitation.
Within each department of the RNOH you will find leaders and experts in their respective fields, allowing them to provide you with the best possible clinical outcomes. The RNOH is well-equipped with cutting-edge technology and state-of-the-art facilities handled by highly trained medical and nursing staff.

I was looked after at the RNOH when I was undergoing major spinal surgery, March 2024. The staff there were amazing, from when we arrived a day early, they still accommodated for us, to just coming in and checking up on me regularly. They are all really friendly and will come and help you quickly if you need something. The hospital itself is in a really nice area, surrounded by lots of trees and the countryside, so a very nice place to look out of from your window in your room, or when you are having a walk around. The garden was lovely too, it allowed a chance to be able just to have a short walk outside without having to go too far away from your room. The food was good, compared to lots of other hospital catering, and there were always snacks and drinks by your bed if you every get hungry. Overall, it is a really good hospital!

Couldn’t have asked for better care or better facilities. The only negative was my discharge and having to return the following morning to pick up meds. This was a result of my discharge being on a Sunday when apparently the pharmacy is closed. Luckily I live locally otherwise this would have been a problem.

The RNOH facilities and staffing were superb. Clean, friendly, modern…. Even Spectacular views! But the discharge process - was shocking. Despite the best efforts of ward staff, nearly 7 hours passed whilst waiting tk be discharged. Doctors hadn’t passed on info to the pharmacy. The pharmacy ran at their own sloth-like pace; the pharmacy in the ward then toddled home and left us still waiting! The whole process could have been as seamless And exceptional as the care from Priscilla’s and Cora’s team. But Shannon’s team was held hostage by a bad internal process, shockingly bad staff availability and worst of all - miscommunication between the weekend staff and the Monday pharmacy shift. It is a known issue on the ward but no one seems able tk fix it. The whole experience of pre op, admission and immediate post op care was amazing - perfect. Just genuinely discharge process set me back a day in my recovery …. A day which should have been get out, get the room cleaned and get another patient in - was me sitting around with my family ….. waiting for the main pharmacy for to do their job.
