Professor Keen had a very warm manner but generally seemed disinterested in my situation. I appreciate that this review is written from the privilege of having private healthcare. However, my provider had approved associated blood tests with this consultation. Prof Keen recognised that I had osteopenia and some autoimmune symptoms but decided to write to my GP to suggest they ran blood tests. This was incredibly frustrating as I was keen to know if I had any autoimmune issues before having major spinal surgery. His secretary became annoyed with me and eventually I was posted a blood test form that had a single non-recognised blood test on it with no request for an autoimmune panel. My GP was perplexed. My bone quality was assumed to be due to prior endometriosis therapy and dismissed, seemingly because no one in my family has had regular fractures. Unfortunately, I only know the medical history of my mothers’ side. I felt like I was having to “feed” him my medical history as he was not curious. I am very sorry that your experience in my clinic fell below the standards expected. There also appear to have some administrative issues with my office, and I apologise for this. My practice aims to offer expertise in osteoporosis and rarer metabolic bone conditions, and I am pleased that you were able to obtain the general rheumatological review and appropriate investigations needed. Your criticisms are noted, and I will look to improve the service offered to future patients.

Prof Keen is highly professional, extraordinarily knowledgeable and very patient. Even though I had seen him over a year ago and hasn’t followed his advice at the time, he didn’t make me feel bad in any way and patiently explained an alternative solution which I’ll definitely be following. A true pleasure and a real gentleman.
