Dr Taher Mahmud is Clinical Lead for Osteoporosis and Consultant Rheumatology and Co-Founder of London Osteoporosis Clinic. He studied at King’s College London and trained in General Medicine at King’s College, St Thomas’ and Pembury Hospitals. Not only this, Dr Mahmud was an Honorary Consultant at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath.

Dr Mahmud believes in preventive medicine and having personally experienced how the effects of osteoporosis can impact an individual's life (that of his Mother), he appreciates the importance of applying a more passionate and holistic approach to the care of his patients. To this extent, working alongside a whole host of professionals coming from a whole host of medical and non-medical backgrounds, he has supported and launched several campaigns, which aim to raise awareness about the influence and dangers of keeping osteoporosis hidden.

Beyond these pursuits, his medical interests include treatments of osteoporosis, patient feedback and mechanisms of drug side effects. Thus spawned the birth of an innovative health service: along with his medical colleagues, Professor Sir Graeme Catto, Professor Hughes and Dr Mahmud launched The London Osteoporosis Clinic, which is the first clinic entirely dedicated to early and post-fracture screening, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.

London Osteoporosis Clinic uses the latest evidenced-based NICE-approved drugs and complementary non-drug treatments. Their aspiration is to work with patients, wider healthcare communities, voluntary sector and business enterprises to eradicate osteoporosis-related fractures.

On a more personal level, Dr Mahmud has an interest in the arts and enjoys sports, tennis and running. He was previously Trustee of Great causes, a charity raising funds for cataract operations in the developing world.

What is a rheumatologist?

Musculoskeletal problems and autoimmune conditions afflict millions around the world. These disorders include somewhat common problems like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout, to the much more complex autoimmune problems like lupus, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and various rare and exotic autoimmune conditions. By definition, the best rheumatologists in London deal with any pain or disorders of the joints, muscles, tendons, bones, and connective tissues, including those caused by autoimmune conditions. Finding top rheumatologists near London is easy with the services of Doctify.

When to see a rheumatologist?

It is important to note that patients experiencing acute or chronic pain from any of the rheumatology areas of concern often have two main questions for medical professionals: 1) what’s causing the pain, and 2) how can we make it go away. When not dealing with an autoimmune disease, the treatment options from rheumatologists in London may be focused on physical therapy, medications, injections (such as steroid or pain injections in the painted joint or muscle areas), or similar tactics. In cases of a suspected autoimmune disease, treatment may be somewhat more difficult.

There are a number of medication options of varying success, in addition to basic pain management regimens. Often, autoimmune diseases may require multiple visits – even when seeing the best rheumatologists in London, as they can be extremely difficult to diagnose and present with variable symptoms from a visit to visit. The most important thing to remember about rheumatologists in London is that they are highly-trained experts that are there to help alleviate your pain as much as possible and determine the root cause of the pain. It can be frustrating for patients who expect an immediate diagnosis and cure, as in many cases, the conditions treated by top rheumatologists in London are chronic and largely incurable. Nevertheless, with the treatment options available, a bit of patience, pain management, and persistence, most patients are able to find solutions to allow them to live their lives to the fullest.

What procedures can you find at a rheumatology clinic?
