About
Shay Nanthakumaran is a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and Weight Loss Surgeon at
Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen Medical School providing robotic, laparoscopic and open surgery for his patients. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. He has many publications in peer reviewed journals and has been invited to speak at national and international meetings on upper gastrointestinal cancer and weight loss surgery.
He studied Medicine at the University of Aberdeen and qualified in 2000. His surgical training was undertaken in Aberdeen and Glasgow.
He was awarded Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the University of Aberdeen in 2010 based on his research into the effect of nutrition on cancer cell behaviour.
He was awarded an Ethicon National Advanced Laparoscopic Fellowship in Bariatric and Gastrointestinal surgery in Newcastle where he gained extensive experience in keyhole weight loss surgery in 2012.
He is a specialist in surgery for oesophageal and stomach cancer, weight loss surgery (gastric bypass, gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy, intragastric balloon) and anti-reflux
surgery. He also performs general surgical procedures such as abdominal wall and groin hernia repairs and removal of the gallbladder.
He has recently been involved in setting up Scotland's first robotic upper gastrointestinal
surgery programme in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and performed the first robotic weight loss operation in Scotland in March 2022.
He has a significant interest in medical education and in addition to teaching on postgraduate courses for the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, he is actively involved with medical student teaching and is the Lead for the General Surgery Teaching at the University of Aberdeen.

Very apprehensive when I arrived as I was concerned re pain still coming from wound area. After examination and discussion left feeling assured that op had been a success, mesh was holding and pain would eventually go away.

Extremely pleasant and welcoming on first meeting. Everything was explained very well and I was told not to worry as l was to be properly looked after. The day of the operation I was again greeted and treated very assuredly. After the operation he came to check on me, said everything had gone well and when I was properly rested could go home and to take things easy. Went back for a check up after a few weeks and again greeted and examined and agreed that everything was fine. I felt very safe and any worries that I might have had were taken away by his wonderful nature.

I found the time spent explaining things to me very useful. Diagrams and photos were used to help my understanding of complicated issues. I found his manner reassuring.
