Practice Plus Group Hospital, Barlborough

I had knee replacement surgery at the Practice Plus hospital at Barlborough on 29th November. The pain I experienced during the two weeks following the surgery on a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate at 8 to 9. Now that I am in my eight week of recovery my pain level is 1 or2 I had a problem in that during the first 2 weeks after surgery I was hardly able to sleep due to the pain when lying down and some nights I had zero hours of sleep. After discussion with the hospital pharmacist it became evident that one of the pain killing medicines I had been prescribed had insomnia as one of it’s side effects. After stopping this medication and taking an alternative my sleep pattern returned to normal and my recovery accelerated. From the experiences of friends who had undergone this surgery I knew that physiotherapy was the key to a successful outcome. The physiotherapy I received at Barlborough was exceptional. By following their exercise plans and receiving guidance at my follow-up visits I am now able walk for one hour virtually pain free, ride my static bike at home and if all goes well should be able to ride my bike on the road in a few weeks time. Mr Finnigan was very gently spoken, and he helped me feel calm and safe. He sppke about what would happen in my operation and spoke me through it all. At all times he asked if I had any questions, and I felt happy and comfortable to ask whatever I needed. Or asked for more information also. He was very kind and answered everything so I could understand. I felt very safe to have Mr Finnigan as my consultant, and I am extremely happy with my surgery which went very well. In my appointment following my operation, i was happy to show him I had full movement of my knee joint and it was repairing well. I would definitely tell any of my family of friends to use Mr Finnigan, and the Spire Manchester Hospital. I also would like to shout out and thank every member of staff, from the porters to administrators, to nurses and all the way up to the Consultants, for the way they looked after me. I was referred to Mr Bailey after seeing my GP and having an X-Ray, and first saw him on 24 October 2025. He showed me the images and explained the options to me and asked what I wanted to achieve. I explained that while I knew I would not run again, it would be nice to be able to take part in recreational skiing once more, albeit on gentler runs, and that I would like the stability of my knee to be restored. He asked how soon I would like to have surgery and I said as soon as possible. I was booked in there and then for surgery on 5 December 2025, which took place as planned and has been highly successful. Nearly seven weeks later I am walking normally, back in the gym, with full knee stability and no knee pain. I continue to do the physio exercises to expand my range of movement. I could not be more satisfied with the result.

Mr Skyrme has been amazing since my first consultation. Following 9 months of sudden severe hip pain which totally curtailed walking and diminished a lot of my activity, I was very desperate to find a solution as I’m super sporty and keeping fit and active is a huge part of my life and my work. It transpired that I needed a hip replacement (at 42) but Mr Skyrme was amazing. My surgery was quick and I recovered really quickly. I was able to return to my physical job at 6 weeks post surgery and I am enjoying increasing amounts of exercise both in the gym and on my bikes. I’m so grateful that I’m able to get back to enjoying my life:-) Mr Skyrme has been super supportive, kind and caring throughout my whole journey!

My son is coming to the end of his treatment for Pectus Excavatum and is pleased with the results having used the vacuum bell for almost two years. Mr Hunt has always been very honest with him and we knew from the start that correcting a 2.6cm dip was not going to happen because of his age (16yrs). However, my son is delighted with his 1cm improvement and for him it has made a difference and he is very grateful that he was accepted to be treated by Mr Hunt. My son is now 18yrs and knows that it is unlikely that his chest will improve further but he is going to finish the two year treatment plan and then start to wind down wearing the vacuum bell. He wears it at night for 8 hours which has worked well for him.

For the first time, I really felt listened to by a GP and not fobbed off with medications that would only treat symptoms but not touch the root cause. I was so grateful to be heard- so much so that I felt quite emotional at points during the consultation. After years of what can only be described as hell dealing with perimenopause symptoms and the extreme stresses of not getting sufficient help or understanding from NHS doctors, I finally feel a real sense of hope that I will be able to 'get back to my old self'. I have used Avenues for a cycle of IVF/ICSi, a hysteroscopy and then FET. I was under the care of De Ali Al Chami and became pregnant with the first transfer, having 3 failed attempts elsewhere. Dr Al Chami changed my protocol (both stimulation and transfer protocol). This places is miles apart because it guarantees continuity of care and patients are treated as people. dr Ali is a wonderful person and he cares about his patients. The midwives (Marina Christina Katie Fiona Emily Starvula) are all amazing and know each patient by name and treated me with warmth, dignity, compassion and professionalism.

I had a robotic total prostatectomy for a high grade cancer and two and a half years later I remain cancer free, with normal urine continence and satisfactory recovery in erectile function. Staff and facilities were amazing. The only thing I felt could be improved was the food. Generally it felt like there was quantity over quality. I had overcooked fish. I selected a starter of prawn and avocado salad one day as I wasn’t overly hungry and was presented with a huge bowl of salad which was swimming in the dressing which wasn’t pleasant. As I say everything else was amazing I just expected the food to match the service.

The facilities were clean and well maintained, but the waiting time could be quite long at times. The restroom was clean; however, the lighting is motion-activated. When I remained in a private stall for an extended period of time, the lights turned off automatically, and I had to exit the stall in complete darkness, which was quite frightening. I believe this needs improvement.

Friendly welcoming receptionist. Mr Almeyda was very approachable and I felt listened to. He was very professional and took time to explain each procedure . I was very impressed as he noticed a small mark on my nose and has referred me to a dermatologist as he thinks it may be a basal skin carcinoma . He suggested I return if my symptoms worsen again .
