RTN Mental Health - Right To Choose

I first started my process in January 2025, using right to choose. There wasn’t a lot of information to choose between providers so I went with the fastest assuming they’d all have to be of a standard to qualify with the NHS. RTN advertised a fast service somewhere up to 12 weeks. Communication is extremely poor. The stages and processes are not explained. Everything is digital, you’re bombarded With a stream of individual emails directing you to forms or questionnaires that have to be completed on a portal that is unfriendly to use. You receive repeated requests for the same information and it’s not clear if you’ve already completed something on the portal. Links expire before you’ve had a chance to read your email so expect delays. Support is poor, if you need help when navigating the forms phone lines are open reduced days and hours differ. Email support is slow and if you have any communication impairment this can be further complicated because of misunderstandings, leading to long email exchanges which are exhausting. It’s very hard to get an update on where you are in the process. There is no transparency. All cases will be different so it’s understood exact times can’t be given but it would be helpful to understand the stages and where you are up to and next steps. This doesn’t happen. I made the mistake of leaving them to their own devices to update me and didn’t chase for 3/4 months, finding they had lost some of my test results. When choosing my first appointment with them online, no information is given on the assessor to make an informed choice so I chose the earliest appointment. The assessor was a graduate fresh out of university, in post for around 6 months. They were not a qualified psychiatrist or psychologist. I was not told this when booking the appointment and offered to go back on the waiting list if I wanted a doctor. The next stage is with a psychiatrist but it’s a long wait because the initial report by the graduate has to be checked. The psychiatrist I saw was an outsourced contractor, I had a poor experience with and there was a communication breakdown. Because they are paid for only the allotted time, for which he was late, he cut me off, very abruptly and he did not follow up when he said information would be sent to me about autism screening. I then received a request to complete an additional test which I later was told was not appropriate. No context is given when you receive these requests and abbreviations and clinical language is used without explanation. Pp RTN then did not attach the results to my file or progress my case. I’m still not sure why this was as when I’ve complained it’s not been fully explained to me. This is very worrying as it suggests no one is reviewing your case. There appears to be no safe guards. I next received a questionnaire titled ‘CV’. This is presumably a precursor to receiving a titration appointment. So I got excited as it’s been 11 months to get to this point. It stand for Cardiovascular by the way. I provide the stats. Then I get three more requests for the same thing.Another indicator no one is monitoring this. I had my first titration appointment in December and a script was written on the 11th, but I still don’t have my meds (it’s 4th Jan), because RTN use an online pharmacy. I wasn’t told to expect an email registration from a company called Cure Connect. RTN sent me an appointment for a follow up even though I hadn’t received my meds. This is how I found out about Cure Connect. I registered with them and they dispatched my meds without texting me so I had no idea what date to expect them. I was away for Christmas. Turns out they have the wrong phone number for me. Cure connect Are digital only and it’s extremely difficult to get in touch with them as they use two factor authentication to access their portal and it was broken when I tried contacting them. They direct you to the portal when you try and seek help. They use Royal Mail tracked 24 and I had to organise a redirect. But it’s not guaranteed. So I’ve been waiting in for two days now and still don’t have my meds. I cut my Christmas break short to drive 163 miles to get back for the redirect. You’re on your own when it comes to navigating Royal Mail and can’t get through to a human. So if you like digital portals, self service and dealing with three company’s through digital mean, being tied down to home for days on end each month to receive your medication this is the company for you the irony of course is that you’d struggle with non written instructions and these types of systems when you have ADHD. RTN are unsympathetic to this and say they can’t send patients individual information /instructions about Cure Connect. Complaining gets you nowhere. They just say they have unprecedented demand and reduced support is temporary. But I’ve read complaints that go back at least 18 months. That’s it temporary, that’s their normal BAU. I’m not sure if they prioritise private referrals but they’ve clearly bid low for the NHS contract based on volume and cannot handle the workload. We are suffering for it.

I am Chinese with one (what I thought was a) hooded eyelid. I was immediately at ease at the consultation with Dr Dharmasena. He took the time to measure my eyes and conducted eye examinations using optical machines. He then drew a diagram which clearly illustrated what needed to be done. There was no pressure. It was clear that he was very experienced in his field. It was agreed that the crease on my eyelid needed to be repositioned (Asian bleph) rather than removing the hood, in fact there was no excess skin to remove. In a different clinic this other consultant offered me hooded eyelid surgery which would have been the completely wrong op. Other consultants would not just operate on one eye as they need to work on both eyes to create symmetry. So I was glad that Dr Dharmasena agreed to operate on one eye and be skilled enough to match it to the good eye. The cost The cost was very reasonable and affordable. There was a consultation fee, the surgeons fee and the hospital fee. The op It took around 40 mins. The hospital fees were very well priced considering there were three nurses and the consumables and equipment needed wouldn’t have been cheap. One of them held my hand incase I was anxious. For me the anaesthetic was just a sharp scratch in the eyelid, which lasted seconds. I opted for no sedation which brought the cost down by hundreds. The only thing I found uncomfortable was the insertion of the eye shield over the eyeball but it was a necessity. Dr Dharmasena popped in more eyedrops in to help numb the eyeball. During the surgery, I could smell burning skin, it is a distinct smell and I’m guessing the cut was done using a laser. Dr Dharmasena sat me up twice to check the position. I don’t remember much more about the operation other than it was very smooth and painless. Afterwards a huge dressing was applied to my eye. After care pack was provided and after a cup of tea and biscuits, I took a taxi home. Recovery. With one eye covered, I had no 3D perception and couldn’t tell how far something was. I removed the plaster the next day. There was no pain, bleeding or bruising. The lid was very swollen and red. I applied the chloramphenicol ointment regularly. The stitching was impressively neat and thin. Purple dissolvable sutures were used. He has also mentioned that he will keep the ends long so that they don’t unravel prematurely. There were 4 deep sutures that created the crease and other evenly spaced stitches along the crease to close the wound. The sutures started to irritate my lid after 14 days because my lid was in that transition stage where the wound is healing but the sutures were still hanging on. So I went to see Dr Dharmasena who removed a couple of sutures that were ready to come out and snipped the rest shorter. This provided a lot of relief and as the days went on, the skin started to heal up and the sutures started to drop off. Now on day 40, only one deep suture remains. The eyelid was a little numb and darker in colour. The feeling is returning and the dark skin is becoming lighter. He also mentioned that he created a crease that is 1mm higher as the lid always drops. Whilst it was healing it was bigger than expected but as it healed, it did drop just as he said it would. I’ve worn make up once and with the new eyelid, I am absolutely thrilled to tears. I can see my eyeliner and eyeshadow for the first time. One really impressive thing to mention is that Dr Dharmasena created an inner crease for my new eye. Chinese eyes don’t usually have an inner crease but my good eye does and he managed to recreate this. I didn’t even know I needed it till he created it and it’s beautiful! I am very happy with the whole experience and thanks to Dr Dharmasena for making one of my dreams come true.

The Portland Hospital truly felt like a five-star hotel combined with exceptional medical care. From the moment we arrived, everything was calm, organised, and incredibly well run, making what can be an overwhelming experience feel reassuring and even enjoyable. The facilities are outstanding, the rooms are beautiful, and the level of comfort is unmatched — but what really makes The Portland special is the people. The care we received from the midwifery team was absolutely exceptional. In particular, midwives/nurses Lucy and Anna were truly wonderful. They were kind, attentive, reassuring, and incredibly supportive, always taking the time to check in, explain everything, and make us feel completely cared for. Their warmth and professionalism made such a difference to our experience and helped us feel confident and supported every step of the way. The aftercare was equally impressive, with genuine attention to both mother and baby. Every member of staff went above and beyond, and nothing ever felt rushed. We are so grateful for the outstanding care we received and would highly recommend The Portland Hospital to anyone looking for exceptional maternity care in a calm, luxurious, and supportive environment.

The cataract in my right eye, which had been quite noticeable, was operated on in the second week of November this year. The less advanced cataract in the left eye was dealt with a fortnight later. My second eye is still settling in, but my surgeon, Mr Park, appears to have produced an excellent overall outcome for me. Having discussed the options with Mr Park, I chose to have a lens in my right (dominant) eye which enables me to see at distance, whilst for the left, I have one which is more suited to closer work. I may need reading glasses for really close work, but using my computer screen presents no problem. Asking questions was encouraged and all queries were dealt with clearly. The staff, and particularly the opthalmic technicians, obviously knew what they needed to do in support of the surgical procedures and all was handled very efficiently. Special thanks to Nurse Debbie who was looking after me, a somewhat anxious patient, before and after the two operations.

I was going to e mail anyway to pass on my thanks so it’s nice to be able to leave a review. How lovely all the staff were that I met on NY eve. Dr Aziz was amazing! What a kind, considerate, empathetic and professional individual. I felt really unwell that day and concerned about some test results. She was so thorough, talked everything through with me in such a kind and understanding way. I left feeling so reassured. I want to thank the two lovely ladies on reception for helping with a couple of issues, a lovely lady who advised about which tests/appointments to approach first and another lovely lady who took my blood tests. I am sorry I did not get any names. But I want to say a huge thank you to all five individuals I met that day. You really helped me so very much. Five star rating all round from me! Happy New Year all.

The Clinic was a little difficult to find but once there the staff were excellent and very efficient. My appointment was on time and the waiting area was warm and comfortable. The consultant was very helpful and explained everything and answered all my questions. I wasn’t rushed or meant to feel unimportant. The nurse was helpful and reassuring. There had been an administrative problem that I had mentioned to the lady on arrival and that was completely sorted out by the time I left which was extremely efficient. I will have no hesitation on returning for a procedure in the near future. An excellent clinic

Had an immigration medical appointment for Australia. I was running late and had to reschedule my AM appointment. Sent an email as the call option was automated message but the email was promptly replied and I was rebooked for the next available PM appointment. It meant I had to wait longer but they were swift to accommodate me and the services from reception to chest X-ray and GP examination was brilliant. I was offered the Polio vaccine and a painless blood tests. Overall I recommend 100%.

Despite the 2 year wait for this appointment, it was the first time I felt I was listened to about my experience. 8 years, post total hysterectomy due to breast cancer diagnosis. No HRT, no real support for menopausal symptoms. I had just accepted and learned to live with it! The doctor was extremely knowledgeable, and understanding, and I came away from the appointment feeling quite emotional. I genuinely felt heard and am keen to try the recommended treatments.

The doctor and nurses here are very kind and really helped me during a nerve wracking procedure that I was highly anxious for. I do think given how much we pay for these appointments, that the facilities could really use a revamp. It fees tired and dated in the common areas and the toilets were not very clean. On top of that, you can never find a parking spot, which adds extra anxiety to pre appointments.

I went to see Claire for some advice about my face: I was concerned about looking too tired and a bit lined having lost some weight. I felt safe and cared for in her hands - I will definitely be coming back!
