It has now been about a year since I underwent my HoLEP procedure to treat an enlarged prostate, and I can honestly say it has been completely life-changing. Before the procedure, my condition had become debilitating. I was in constant pain, dreaded going to the toilet, and felt restricted from travelling, socialising, or taking part in everyday activities. It affected me both physically and mentally, and I was in a very low place. Everything changed when my consultant referred me to Dr Tev Aho, who introduced me to the HoLEP procedure. From our very first meeting, Dr Aho was incredibly reassuring and informative. He clearly explained the procedure, shared the facts and success rates, discussed possible side effects, and outlined the options available should further treatment ever be needed. His honesty and confidence immediately put me at ease and gave me real hope at a time when I desperately needed it. Despite how unwell I was at the time, I felt confident moving forward. Dr Aho told me he expected me to be up and walking on the same day as the procedure—and remarkably, that’s exactly what happened. My recovery exceeded all expectations. Today, I am pain-free, back to my normal self, and feeling mentally positive again. The benefits of the procedure have far outweighed the minimal side effects, and the improvement in my quality of life has been incredible. I am deeply grateful to both Chris Dawson and Dr Tev Aho for giving me my life back. If anyone finds themselves in the position I was in, I cannot recommend the HoLEP procedure—and Dr Tev Aho—highly enough.

Experience OK but to have to travel 80 mile round trip with 24 hrs notice was stressful, for the pre-accessment which I had to ask for, as not arranged. If I had been told on the information letter that if I was taking antibiotics I would need to have 4 weeks clear before I could have my procedure, this would have prevented me from excepting the procedure date I had been given. Therefore would have given the date to someone else. I had two weeks notice of my procedure which is OK if all information had been given to me. Find the administration side lacking. Lovely staff. .

The consultant’s PA insisted that I go to GenesisCare for the ultrasound but then booked my appointment on a day where the technician was on annual leave, so I had to make an extra visit. I was unhappy to need a second visit just for ultrasound - the consultant’s PA insisted that I see the consultant at GenesisCare, which is less convenient location. but booked my appointment on a day where the technician was on annual leave.

I moved house before Christmas and during the process I lifted a piano (big mistake!), sofa, wardrobes, beds, washing machine etc. This resulted in severe pain in my lower back and left leg. Overall I am satisfied with the service but I don't always feel like my consultant is as prepared for the consultation as he should be given how much it costs. I would expect him to have familiarised himself with my notes and previous conversations that we have had about treatment options. I find that I sometimes have to go over the same ground that we have discussed before.
