What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

A Brazilian butt lift is a procedure that involves augmenting the shape of your buttocks with your own body fat. The naturally ageing process can result in your buttocks losing fat and developing an older, asymmetric and flatter appearance. Since this procedure uses your own body tissue, there is little chance your body will reject it and will feel natural since the fat will take on the characteristics of tissue already there. Another feature of the procedure is that fat is removed from where you do not want it, and moved to where you do. The results of the procedure vary because you body will naturally resorb some of the fat, but a general rule is whatever remains after 3 months will be permanent.

How is a Brazilian Butt Lift performed?

The procedure involves transferring fat from areas such as the stomach, thighs and hips and transferred to your buttocks. The fat is removed using a technique called liposuction, which involves using a fine cannula to remove live fat cells. These cells are then mixed with your platelet rich plasma, which helps with tissue healing and survival, and is injected into your buttocks in droplets using another fine cannula. The fat cells are deposited in the muscle layers of your buttocks, where there is a rich blood supply and a good chance of cell survival. This layering technique is important for providing an even distribution and natural appearance. The amount of fat required for the procedure varies from patient to patient but is usually between 200-500g of fat, and is therefore not a procedure suitable for thin people. If you are a thin person, then implants may be more appropriate.

How to prepare for a Brazilian Butt Lift?

A few weeks before the procedure you will meet with your plastic surgeon to discuss the suitability of the surgery, and undergo routine blood tests. If you are currently taking any medication you will need to discuss with your surgeon if and how you need to amend your drug regimen. As is the case for most surgical procedures, you will be instructed not to have eaten anything for 8 hours before the procedure, and no drinks but water on the day of the surgery up until 2 hours before the procedure.

What happens after a Brazilian Butt Lift?

After the procedure the buttocks will swell and may have some bruising, however this will subside within 1-2 weeks. There is usually very little buttock discomfort following the procedure, however you will need to wear a body garment for 4-6 weeks on the liposuctioned area. Usually you can return to work after 7-10 days depending on the rate of healing. It is advised you minimise the amount of time you spend sitting on your buttocks soon after the procedure since some plastic surgeons believe this can reduce the long term result. It is important to note that after a week or so the swelling will disappear and some fat will be resorbed, however the final result will not be apparent until after 3 months.
