What is Trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis is a relatively common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a single-celled parasite called trichomonas vaginalis. The infection affects both men and women, harbouring the urogenital tracts (urethra in men, and both urethra and vagina in women). What are the causes for Trichomoniasis?
The cause of the trichomoniasis is infection by the parasite trichomonas vaginalis. This is a tiny, single-celled organism which is spread by unprotected sex or sharing of sex toys.
What are the symptoms of Trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis is symptomless in around half of those infected. Affected women can experience abnormal vaginal discharge that may be thick, frothy or unpleasant smelling. The vagina can become itchy and they may experience pain whilst they passing urine. Affected men may also experience pain whilst passing urine, or ejaculating. Furthermore, they may experience a thin white discharge from the penis, along with soreness and redness around the head of the penis.
How is Trichomoniasis treated?
Trichomoniasis is treated effectively with an antibiotic called metronidazole. It is important that you complete the full course of the treatment. Furthermore, it is important that your current sexual partners are treated to prevent re-infection.
