    Mr Paul Culpan

    Orthopaedic Surgeon

    5.0

    Verified

I most recently saw Dr. Culpan at the LIPS clinic in Battersea for a post-operative review, approximately 6 months after my surgery. As I have had a number of appointments with Dr. Culpan, before and after surgery, I will refer to my experience across all appointments, not just the most recent. Earlier this year, I suffered an acute injury to my knee, presenting to Dr. Culpan with difficulty walking, alongside sharp pain and swelling. On initial examination, Dr. Culpan suspected a meniscus tear. Recognising the severity of my symptoms, he contacted his network to arrange an urgent MRI, which was booked in on the very same day. Then, once the MRI confirmed his initial suspicions, Dr. Culpan very clearly explained the exact nature of my injury and all the treatment options available to me. After conferring with a radiologist colleague, to be absolutely certain of the optimal course of treatment, Dr. Culpan presented me with his surgical plan alongside likely outcomes and timelines for my rehabilitation. Having considered all of the information I was presented with, I carefully weighed up the costs and benefits of each possible course of treatment before ultimately concluding that surgery was the best choice for me. Dr. Culpan performed the surgery - an arthroscopy of the knee - at King Edward VII Hospital in London and, even though there was a potential complication in the shape of the damage to my knee being more severe than could be identified on the MRI, the operation went perfectly smoothly. As per his suggestion and in line with my wishes, Dr. Culpan took a minimally invasive and conservative approach, repairing the meniscus wherever possible and removing only the smallest parts which were beyond repair. Even though my post-operative rehabilitation has been focused around physiotherapy, I have remained under Dr. Culpan’s care. Throughout this period, Dr. Culpan has been in close contact with my physiotherapist and has seen me at key checkpoints (e.g. 3 months, and 6 months post-surgery) to personally examine the state of my knee joint and to monitor my overall progress. Thanks to this, my rehabilitation has gone exactly according to plan so far and I hope to make a full recovery. Overall, I am incredibly pleased with the treatment I have received and would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Culpan to anyone with a similar injury. I believe that what sets Dr. Culpan apart is his: 1. Communication: Throughout every stage of my treatment, Dr. Culpan clearly explained the medical context in an approachable way such that a non-expert such as myself could understand it. Moreover, he provided me with a comprehensive view of all the treatment options available to me as well as their costs and benefits. Both of these facts together meant that he enabled me to make an informed decision about what course of treatment would be best for me and my health rather than being told what to do. 2. Compassion: In my interactions with Dr. Culpan, what perhaps struck me most is how much he cares about his patients. When Dr. Culpan first recommended surgery, I was incredibly anxious and apprehensive as I had never had surgery before. When I shared these concerns with Dr. Culpan, he was incredibly sympathetic and understanding. Rather than dismiss my concerns as being irrational, he explained the procedure in great detail including, for example, how safe the procedure is and how routinely he carries it out. Thanks to this, my fears were allayed and I went ahead with the operation. Even though I believe that it was in my best interests to have the surgery, I doubt I would have gone ahead with it if not for the care that Dr. Culpan showed in this regard. 3. Concern: Dr. Culpan clearly understands the grave responsibilities of being an orthopaedic surgeon and the trust that his patients put in him. He demonstrated this to me through both his insistence on seeking a second opinion before deciding on an optimal treatment plan and the quality of his post-operative care. In the former case, when faced with inconclusive images produced by the MRI scan, Dr. Culpan chose to seek the counsel and expertise of a radiologist colleague rather than unilaterally decide on a treatment plan. In the latter case, with his close monitoring of the progress of my injury and my post-operative outcomes, Dr. Culpan showed that his concern for patients does not end once surgery is over.

    Dr. Daniel Stott

Dr Stott supported me in the assisted vaginal delivery of my baby girl at Fitzrovia Suite, UCLH. I could have not been more happy to have chosen him as my consultant. I had hoped for a natural delivery at full term, but had some slight complications which meant that was not possible. Despite this, thanks to Dr Stott both my baby and I did very well, and I look back at her birth process as a very positive experience. Dr Stott has sound judgement when it comes to clinical decisions. He is calm and clear at communicating and explaining the reasoning behind his recommendations in easily accessible terms. And he was excellent at the delivery process itself. Due to gestational diabetes I was recommended to have an early induction. Dr Stott explained the process and its benefits in detail, so I felt prepared on the day. My baby was very small, and during the final stage of labour she became distressed. Dr Stott suggested a vacuum assisted delivery to speed things up, knowing I wanted to avoid a C section if possible. Despite the urgency, he remained calm and made sure I understood what was happening throughout the process and I felt entirely confident in his recommendation. The outcome was great - despite an episiotomy I was able to move straight away, have not had any discomfort and all the midwives who visited me have been commenting on how well the stitches were done; despite the stress she was under my daughter was well, and her head looked completely normal from the outset. I feel very lucky to have had Dr Stott support me through this all, and I do genuinely believe that having him as my consultant made a huge difference on the outcome and how satisfied I was with the birth experience.

It would be helpful to add the following to your briefing: after surgery - we will offer to help you to a taxi or to the taxi rank, if you do not have a person to accompany you (I went downstairs on my own and had to find a taxi - as the rank was not manned) Worth considering clear plastic, wrap around glasses for walking/cycling in windy areas/or where likely to be grit in the air Clear some space in your fridge for the eye drops which will need to be refrigerated If you are travelling invest in a portable coo lbag, with icepack to keep eye drops at the required temperature tell people ahead of time no eye make up on the day or for a month post op / swimming hair washing will be tricky for a few days, so consider dry shampoo explain to people what is normal in terms of recovery day by day over the subsequent days post surgery explain to people what to do, if despite taking the drops, there is a feeling of grit in eyes explain to people - if it is normal or not to see halos or to see with a soft focus - perhaps have images, which are shown ahead of time provide youtube video with how to insert drops - have practise drop session on a pre visit, with non irritant drops, to enable the technique to be mastered The person who provided the medicines did not go through the 'knuckle technique' which is on the document provided, trying to master this when your eye sight is recovering is not straightforward Suggest that patients have ibrufen 200 and or paracetemol at the ready suggest setting alarm on phone at regular intervals for drop taking

On visiting consultant Subhajit Ghosh a prescription was given to the nurse to be ordered for my next appointment as it was something that was not kept in stock at OSD. I needed to check my diary to see if I could make this next appointment at OSD Healthcare in Hemel Hempstead to have the prescription or, see the consultant at Spire Hospital on another day. On checking my diary I found I could make it and I phoned and arranged an appointment with Subhajit Ghosh. Unfortunately, the prescription had not been ordered so when I turned up for my next appointment I was unable to have my treatment and I would have to see him again another time. I appreciate mix ups happen but thought OSD Healthcare should check their procedures in instances such as this, so that prescriptions are ordered once patients have confirmed they can make future appointments.

Mr Blocker explained clearly the reason for my leg length discrepancy Unfortunately a skiing injury earlier in life has created the need for surgery Mr Blocker is a good communicator and inspires confidence I have done my best to stay active, I have worked hard at the physiotherapiy exercises and in the gym . When my hip became seriously painful I was very grateful that I was able to use PIFU to arrange an appointment and give consent at that appointment Surgery was scheduled soon after. Although I was discharged from hospital with stronger medication should I need it I have only taken paracetamol which I was able to reduce and finished taking on the 11th day after surgery

The administrative processes are not always easy to naviagate but the staff at the hospital are professional and helpful. Staff on reception seem well briefed on what information is needed from patients. Clinical staff - both on the wards and in the CT scanning teams were professional and reassuring. It would be useful - for people accompanying a patient for a procedure - to have some information about facilities available to them. I was at the hospital for 12 hours and the only way to get something to eat was to go out of the hopsital to buy it. It would have been helpful to have some catering available on site - if only by machine.

The quality of my sight in both eyes has been greatly improved by 2 recent operations performed by Mr Lee. His surgical skills have almost completely resolved a distressing epiretinal membrane condition I suffered from 3 years ago and sight in that eye is now excellent. Recently, I had cataract surgery to the other eye and again, sight is now excellent in that eye too. His impressive surgical skills are matched by his kind, patient and reassuring manner, this is very helpful for the anxious patient. I would certainly return to him should I require any further treatments.

He's measured my progress over time using rep count reports and strength measuring devices as well as charting general wellbeing. We recently started adapted boxing too which I have enjoyed. I feel really supported and motivated to reach my goals. He is understanding and meets you where you are at fitness-wise, as well as pushing you to the best you can be. I would definitely recommend Jack to other people with long term health conditions like me.

Waiting over 60 minutes for an appointment that you schedule and pay for is quite poor. The excuse I got is gynaecologist appointments take longer. Okay, then play’ 30-60 mins between slots to allow for adequate timing. I had to get out of work and work the extra time that had I been offered the actual appointment time I wouldn’t have had to do that. Change your gynaecologist appointments calendar please

A thorough explanation and treatment required all given and sent to my daughter's doctor. The most excellent service thank you.
