Mr Mohammed Akmal

I have been under the care of Mr. Akmal since 2022, for treatment of Spinal disc degeneration. Without his professional skill and empathy I would still be in chronic pain. Having had a very successful disc replacement & fusion surgery back in 2023 under his care, further deterioration in other joints resulted in needing another bout of disc replacements and fusion in my cervical spine, and cortex spacers in my lumber spine. In late 2025 I embarked on another session of surgery and underwent the operation to replace, fuse and insert spacers in the offending areas of my Lumber & Cervical spine. I request both of my afflicted areas be treated in the same operation, whilst naturally cautious he undertook a rigorous assessment of the risks and eventually he and his team agreed to proceed. I had both my Cervical and Lumber spine treated in the same surgery and having entered at 07:00, I once again walked out at 18:00 on the same day. 2 weeks later the key hole wounds had healed I was off painkillers and well on the way to full recovery. My experience again is a testimony not only to the personal skill, knowledge and empathy of Mr. Akmal, but to all the people who enable such life changing surgery to happen, including the anaesthetist, surgical team, and ward staff. The successes of the surgery undertaken by Mr. Akmal and his highly skilled team are due not only to their professional skills, but to the holistic approach taken from diagnosis, explanation of options, type of painkillers and follow up care. Whilst the impact of aging and bodily wear cannot be escaped, Mr. Akmal does offer options to improve quality of life immensely. An interesting footnote is prior to the surgery I was suffering from Hypertension, post surgery my BP is back to normal for my age, a reflection of how chronic pain can affect you in more ways than one....!!

Mr Senthurun Mylvaganam

I cannot recommend Mr Senthurun Mylvaganam highly enough. From the very first consultation he took genuine time to understand my goals, concerns and expectations, and made sure I fully understood every option available. He talked me through implant types, sizes and shapes in a way that was clear, calm and never overwhelming, always centring the conversation around what I personally wanted to achieve. His manner was incredibly gentle, kind and reassuring, while still being honest and informative throughout. I did change my mind a few times regarding size, but he always made time to speak with me about it and ensured that it genuinely felt like my decision — offering expert guidance without ever making me feel pressured. He also mentioned to me that I can come back after my final appointment if I had any further questions or concerns, which really showed how much he cared about my confidence and comfort. In the end I haven’t had a single issue at all. I never once felt rushed, and I left every appointment feeling supported, listened to and completely at ease. It is rare to find a surgeon who combines such professionalism with such warmth, and I am so grateful to have been in his care.

I recently had an operation performed by Professor Shaikh. In the lead up, I had several discussions with him about the way forward; he was highly professional and very helpful. He explained the options to me very carefully, he gave advice and allowed time for me to ask questions which he answered fully. However, I was over weight and he explained very carefully the risks posed in surgery by the extra weight I was carrying. We decided a way forward together; we set a date for the operation, allowing time for me to lose some weight. I was very grateful to him for providing me with a clear focus and for his encouragement. By the date of the operation, I had lost a substantial amount of weight and the operation was performed successfully. I have a great deal to thank Professor Shaikh for - in addition to his surgical expertise, I am grateful for his advice, encouragement and support. I have the utmost confidence in him and I have no hesitation in recommending him, unreservedly.

I got to the hospital early due to the known parking issues. I spent 20 mins going around the hospital car parks without success. I made receptionists aware that I was there and had parking issues. I was advised that I couldn’t use your car park as I am an NHS patient. I don’t appreciate 2 tier management of patient's needs. I was informed that I could park directly outside on yellow lines without fear of receiving a penalty. I was worried while in Spencer’s as I wasn’t totally happy with where I was parked. As I was early, I was seen 15 mins before my appointment. I was made to understand that because I had difficulty uploading my medication the nurse had to complete this task. Staff were friendly and clearly experienced. I was given a reserved date.

Mr Jonathan Pollock

At the outset I was nervous as the suspected bcc was in an awkward place. Mr Pollock talked through all the options with me and I was happy with the decision to go for a "small margin" in the first instance. The excision was done on 26th November. The surgery went well. Mr Pollock did an excellent job, particularly because it was around the mouth area. On 31st December I had a follow up appointment to find out the results. Mr Pollock reiterated the discussion we had previously had about the various options and then told me it was an infiltrative bcc with roots . I was very worried at the prospect of more surgery. He then told me he had successfully got it all out. Tip for next time: Maybe lead with "Its good news".

Mr Shobhit Verma is an outstanding orthopaedic surgeon. He is honest and easy to communicate with regarding any concerns or questions to get back to your best. He is very kind, pleasant, efficient and has strong healing hands blessed by God. Mr Shobhit Verma is approachable and consistently professional. He shows great respect for all members of the team regardless of rank and are always willing to mentor junior doctors and nursing staff. Also as a patient I had a great experience with him. I will absolutely recommend any friends and colleagues to him in future to work with him and get care from him.

Mr James Smellie is my surgeon and I couldn't be happier. His relaxed manner puts one at ease immediately and the information he gives is concise and clearly explained. I couldn't be in better hands and I will be eternally grateful for all that he has done for me. My scar, after just over two weeks post surgery, is almost invisible and placed so carefully and thoughtfully along a muscle line, that in time it will disappear completely. Communication about where the treatment was to take place could have been a bit clearer - appointment was arranged via Shawfair Park reception but treatment was actually at Murrayfield which wasn't clear to me. Murrayfield reception also called and seemed surprised too that it has been done by Shawfair but didn't clarify where it was happening. All worked out in the end though.

Dr Rahman was a charming man who who put you at your ease and was very chatty and amusing with his assistant which was nice to listen to. The filling didn’t take long and I was soon out and able to eat and drink without having to wait!
