Abhijit is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with specialist expertise in glaucoma, complex cataract surgery and advanced lens-based surgery. He provides comprehensive assessment and treatment for patients requiring specialist glaucoma care, complex cataract management, and contemporary surgical options tailored to their individual needs.
Abhijit graduated from the University of Bristol with a BSc (Hons) in Anatomical Sciences and a MBChB. He subsequently completed a comprehensive seven-year ophthalmology training programme, obtaining the Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. His specialist training included an advanced glaucoma residency followed by a senior fellowship in complex glaucoma surgery at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, one of Europe’s largest tertiary ophthalmic referral centres.
He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery from the University of Ulster with Distinction, with particular expertise in modern intraocular lens technology, premium IOL selection and refractive cataract surgery. This enables him to provide patients with a detailed assessment of their suitability for different lens technologies, balancing visual expectations, ocular health and long-term glaucoma considerations.
Abhijit holds a substantive NHS post at the Wolverhampton and Midland Counties Eye Infirmary and the Cannock Eye Centre. His NHS practice encompasses general ophthalmology, cataract surgery, emergency ophthalmology and a comprehensive interventional glaucoma service.
Abhijit has a particular interest in individualised glaucoma treatment, from early intervention through to complex and refractory disease. His surgical expertise includes:
• Glaucoma laser procedures (laser iridotomy and SLT)
• Implant-free minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) in the form of ab-interno canaloplasty (ABiC) and gonio-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (GATT)
• Trabecular micro-bypass procedures (iStent inject, iStent infinite)
• Modern large and small bore glaucoma drainage devices (ClearPath, EyePlate-S, Preserflo)
• Modern Trabeculectomy augmented with Mitomycin-C
He has performed ABiC and GATT (iTrack) since 2018 and introduced these techniques to his NHS Trust in 2022. His practice encompasses a broad range of MIGS and filtration procedures, allowing treatment to be selected according to the patient’s glaucoma severity, target pressure, ocular anatomy, medication burden and individual circumstances.
Abhijit’s cataract practice combines high-volume microincision cataract surgery with expertise in complex angle-closure cases as well as premium IOL technology. He has a particular interest in helping patients understand the potential benefits and limitations of advanced IOL options, including their suitability in the presence of glaucoma or other ocular comorbidity.
Abhijit is actively involved in postgraduate education and surgical training, teaching ophthalmology trainees, medical students, optometrists and clinical nurse specialists. He is a cataract and glaucoma surgical trainer for both junior and senior ophthalmology trainees and was runner-up in the 2025 West Midlands School of Ophthalmology Outstanding Trainer Award, nominated by ophthalmology trainees across the region.
His clinical and academic interests include glaucoma surgery, MIGS, advanced cataract surgery and premium IOL technology. He has authored multiple peer-reviewed scientific publications, contributed a textbook chapter on glaucoma surgery, and has presented his work extensively at national and international ophthalmic meetings over the past 17 years, receiving several academic and conference prizes.
Abhijit is committed to evidence-based, patient-centred ophthalmology, with a particular emphasis on providing patients with clear specialist advice, a comprehensive assessment and a carefully considered range of treatment options.
