    I was referred to Newmedica Newcastle for eye cataract surgery by my optician. I had my first eye surgery done in September, and my second eye done in December. I received excellent service from all the Newmedica colleagues whenever I visited; for my pre-surgery consultation, the surgeries themselves, and the post-surgery visits. Those working on the reception were friendly and made me feel welcome. The waiting area was clean and tidy, with hot drinks available. The colleagues who did the testing, pre-surgery administration, and post-surgery follow up checks were all very knowledgeable. They took me through the surgery preparations, explaining the process as they went, putting me at ease and answering any questions. After surgery they made sure I was aware of what I needed to do over the following three weeks to ensure my eyes healed completely. The surgical team were very proficient, and I felt I was in safe hands. The procedure was explained at every step, putting me at ease. The consultant for my first procedure was Nicholas Wride. The procedure itself took just under 3 minutes, which I had not expected, as internet searches indicated it would take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. I was so impressed and, as I was told I could have the same consultant for the cataract removal procedure on my second eye, I didn’t hesitate to ask for Nicholas Wride again. My second procedure was equally as expertly performed, and this time took 3 minutes 20 seconds. There was no pain during the procedures and only very slight discomfort straight afterwards. Other than the pain relief eye drops that were put in for the surgical procedure, I didn’t need to take any painkillers at all. The hardest part for me was remembering to use the post-surgery eye drops the clinic provided, as my eyes felt that good. Three weeks after surgery, I attended the clinic for post-surgery follow up checks. I was signed off from the clinic after the follow up check on my second eye. My vision is now excellent, and I only need to use reading glasses for small print. Before the surgery I wore varifocal lens glasses at all times. I wasn’t expecting the improvements in my sight to be quite so good, so I’m pleased I took up the opportunity to have my cataracts removed and really pleased that it was Newmedica Newcastle who did the procedures and looked after me and my sight so well.     There was a lot of waiting for drops to take effect as part of the treatment but the fact that everytime one of the staff passed they acknowledged you so you didn't feel you had been forgotten, a big plus in my book. There were many times when my DOB and name were checked. This made me feel secure as I think it made me feel that any mix up was very unlikely, another plus in my book. During the set up for the operation I was asked to look into the very bright light. Not a problem for the eye being operated on but keeping my other eye open as requested was difficult for me. Perhaps some form of shading for the other eye could be provided so that the natural instinct to close that eye could be eliminated and thus the natural effect of doing that affecting the eye being operated on. During the operation the surgeon needed to speak to me at times. I am hard of hearing and didn't have my hearing aids in. At times it was hard to hear the surgeon. The issue was worse when the "pump" noise was going. Some of this was the fact that she was a lady with a higher pitch voice, whereas I could easily hear the male voice in the room. I have the same issue hearing my wife for the same reason (I claim!). Perhaps it would be good if the surgeon established if there is a hearing problem and if there is, the voice volume could be raised. I realise that this is my problem but I cannot be unique in this case given the age profile of you patients. This visit was my second eye so I knew what was happening. However, thinking back to my first visit perhaps a slightly better introduction could be given to new patients as to what to expect with the intervals between patient staff interactions to help limit any anxiety they may feel. Also a bit more information regarding the after effects of the operation could help and anxiety at that time. I realise you will wince at this but I found a YouTube video of american origin that went through the after effects step by step and this relieved me as I realised what was happening to me was normal. Overall I was very pleased with the atitude of all the staff I met and the service they provided. Thank you very much.

    Admin efficiency Things didn't get off to a great start when there seemed to be an issue regarding what my insurance would cover, even though I had received two confirmations from the insurer over the phone and one confirmation by email. I felt a bit like a criminal and that I was lying about the treatment being covered. In the end, the insurer had to phone Practice Plus direct to sort it out, because no-one would believe that I was telling the truth. I've never come across this problem before at the Spire or the Nuffield. Usually the admin trail works very smoothly. Cleanliness The carpet in the waiting area is dirty and is covered in tea/coffee stains. There were pubic hairs on the toilet seat in one of the toilets by the waiting area. Not great at all. Waiting Time I am a private patient and I usually use the Spire in Bristol or the Nuffield, which run to time. My appointment for an injection was 30minutes late. Unacceptable. Staff To be fair, some of the staff are lovely. But some of the staff are downright rude. When I went to speak to one of the receptionists after waiting for my appointment for over 20minutes, I simply asked to check that I was on the system. The answer "yes". Oh I said, it's just that I haven't been called yet. Is there a delay? The answer "yes" - and a roll of the eyes to say "yes and your problem with that is??" I have to have another appointment at some point, so let's hope that my next experience is better.

    I cannot praise Mr Malek enough. It is no exaggeration when I say that he has changed my life. From our very first meeting he was professional with a warm and friendly manner, and I felt that someone was actually hearing me. After what felt like a battle with my own GP to get to see a consultant, I was daunting going into that fiets appointment, but Mr Malek knew by just looking at how I walked, and the xray, how bad things were for me. He explained everything so I fully understood. What had happened to my hips, pointing out the problem areas on the xray, and what my options were. There was no pressure from Mr Malek, just a calm manner. As this was my second hip replacement I knew what to expect. Mr Malek came to see me in my room before the op, and explained the procedure that was about to take place. He answered any questions I had, and his calm nature left me feeling confident about going into theatre. My operation went as expected and I now have two perfect hips, thanks to Mr Malek. I am so thankful.

    Everything was appreciated. the only thing noticed was the main front desk receptionist as you check-in and indeed who checked me in before my appointment, which was at 12:45pm. She seemed over-worked and was not very welcoming, yet it was before lunch. The reception staff are the first point of contact for anyone and need to maintain a happier face (regardless of their own issues) and use far more entertaining approach or greeting language. My contact with this lady was not even 1-minute and this was not even fulfilled. This is compared to many places I have came across including hospital staff e.g MIR or my local GP including anywhere where you deal with the general public. Her approach was out of the ordinary and it was more like she was facing issues, no thanks expressed. Only formal questions asked in a rush so I can be marked in quickly and that's it.

    I am so thrilled with my experience at Weymouth Street Hospital, London, after having had cataracts removed in both of my eyes, by Mr Hove of Blue Fin Vision. I can see clearly now, both distance and close up, reading, computer etc, etc.. ; no need for any glasses. Mr Hove is truly amazing - so caring, kind and professional. He explained everything to me in my assessment on Monday 8th December, in Chelmsford and actually had the operation in such a short time - Thursday 11th December! I am a new person now ! Doctor Carlos, the anesthetist, was also so kind and caring. I felt thoroughly at ease for my operation. Many, many thanks to everybody, including the kind nurse. My husband and I were both given a delicious meal afterwards, which was really appreciated - so welcome. Thank you very, very much for everything, everybody

    Hospital was dirty. Room was dirty. Was provided with a pillow that was fully stained yellow on one side with no pillow cover. One of the nurses saw it when he turned it over but I had already been lying on it for hours. Went to the surgery without any pillow only to wake up to another stained pillow without any cover. Found a toenail on the bed. Very unhygienic and was not comfortable. Staff were ok. Food received was not what I ordered, so left without eating anything. Will only be coming back for my second operation because it is the surgeons only practice that is close to where I live, otherwise would not be returning. Hygiene is most important in these environments and it was not to par at all. Worse than NHS.

    I arrived 30 minutes early for my appointment and when I booked in I was able to go straight through to the treatment room. The consultant and 2 nurses were so good with me. They could all see how nervous and anxious I was but made to feel at ease (even held my hand). The procedure was over very quickly without any discomfort. The part that took the longest was booking my next appointment as the computer system had gone down through no fault of anyone at the desk. After that I got myself a cup of coffee and sat and relaxed until it was time to get my bus. Altogether a much less harrowing appointment than I thought it would be!
