In 2005, he began a three-year full-time PhD programme in prostate cancer genetics at Newcastle University, funded by a renowned Medical Research Council Clinical Research Training Fellowship. He then relocated to the West of Scotland for urology training, concentrating on complex cancer surgery, and he became a urology specialist in 2014.
During his time as a clinical lecturer at the University of Glasgow, he also completed post-doctoral research at the Cancer Research UK (CR-UK) Beatson Institute and was the first urologist in Scotland to be awarded a very competitive Royal College of Surgeons of England/CR-UK Clinician Scientist Fellowship in Surgery to assist with his prostate cancer research.
Professor Rajan completed a clinical and research fellowship in robotic "keyhole" prostate cancer surgery at Stockholm's Karolinska Institutet and University Hospital. In 2015, he returned to Glasgow and became a Consultant Urologist, specialising in laparoscopic (keyhole) kidney cancer surgery. In the same year, he joined St. Bartholomew's Hospital (Barts Health NHS Trust) and University College London NHS Foundation Trust in London, UK. He now specialises in robotic prostate cancer surgery as well as complex advanced testicular cancer procedures.
Professor Rajan is Professor and Chair of Urology and Robotic Surgery at Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University of London. He leads an internationally known laboratory-based research group and conducts clinical studies to develop innovative approaches to treat prostate and testicular cancer.
Professor Rajan is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Higher Education Academy, and the Alan Turing Institute. He is a member of the Advanced Prostate Cancer and Germ Cell Tumours Research Groups at the National Cancer Research Institute. In addition, he is an Associate Professor of Urology at University College London (UCL) and a member of the UCL Urology Clinical Academic Board.
