    Spire Elland Hospital

Orthopaedic Surgery, Ear Nose & Throat Surgery (ENT/Otolaryngology), + 2 more

Overall, Spire Elland was great and I would happily return should I require any further procedures in the future. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, and everything is very clean. I think the main thing letting the hospital down is patient communication. All appointments and comms are recorded and delivered via an app. If you don't want to or aren't able to download the app (like me), you do end up being left a little in the dark about things. For example, I had been given a surgery date fairly soon after my initial consultation, which was great, however I hadn't been informed that there would be multiple pre-operative assessment appointments to attend - all of which were on-site at Spire Elland, which is around an hour's drive for us. On one occasion, I had to make last-minute arrangements to move clients around as I'd been unaware of an upcoming appointment - I'd received no email, no text, no phone call, no letter. I just so happened to log in to my online portal and find the appointment date there. I moved clients around so I could attend, and just a couple of days before my appointment received a text message to say the date had changed, with no explanation provided. I called to try and find out why this might be, but was met with a dismissive reply of, "We just had to move it". All of the documents outlining the process for my surgery and the prep I should do beforehand were provided online, and the online portal isn't the simplest to navigate, so accessing them wasn't as easy as it could have been. When I was admitted for my day surgery, the staff were very welcoming and friendly, although I did find that I received a blunt reply whenever I asked a question about anything. This was my first ever surgery and my first time being put under general anaesthetic, so naturally I was quite nervous. Some of the members of staff were very helpful and supportive, but others seemed to have little patience, which wasn't ideal and only served to make me more anxious. When I came to after the surgery, I had been expecting to have a bit of a handover with someone so I could at least find out how it had gone and what they had/hadn't found. Unfortunately, Mr Gan was occupied in another surgery, and so I was discharged before having the chance to speak to him. I asked the nurses for some clarification - any brief notes or insights they might be able to give to put my mind at ease a bit until I could speak with Mr Gan - but this was met with quite curt replies. I was told no one could read Mr Gan's handwriting so no one could tell me any information, which at the time was quite frustrating as I'd been dealing with the pain for so long and had viewed the laparoscopy as the light at the end of the tunnel. It was disheartening to leave the hospital without any real clarification of the issue. Now having had my final follow-up with Mr Gan, I can say with confidence that all of my questions have been answered, and I feel validated and supported as a patient. However, I can't help but feel that had the communication from the hospital team been a little better throughout the process, it wouldn't have been so frustrating to wake up after the surgery and find that no one could tell me how it had gone.

Last year I was struggling significantly with my breathing and had a couple of referrals with the NHS ENT team regarding a Nasal Valve Collapse. Unfortunately, the NHS were not able to address my nasal valve issue and would only correct my deviated septum, so I looked elsewhere for private options and spoke with several surgeons about a functional septorhinoplasty. I found Prof Chatrath online after researching surgeons who specialise in nasal issues, particularly nasal valve collapse. It seems there are very few surgeons in the UK who perform this type of surgery. On first consultation, Prof Chatrath was very understanding of my issue and we began a course of steroids straight away. After a trial period, he recommended a nasal endoscopy to properly assess the problem. This revealed a deviated septum and severely enlarged turbinates, both of which he suspected were playing a significant role in my breathing issues and nasal valve strain. We agreed to proceed with a septoplasty, intranasal Z-plasty (I believe to widen and stiffen the internal valve area), RF turbinate reduction, and alar batten and rim grafts on to correct the issue using a closed, non-invasive approach. Paul also recommended RF turbinate reduction being mindful of the risks of Empty Nose Syndrome, which was reassuring. Other surgeons I consulted recommended a full open rhinoplasty with lots of cartilage grafting, which I understood was is a lot to go through. Paul instead was keener on a more conservative closed septorhinoplasty and was clear that this would not rule out future options if it wasn’t successful, so not to overtreat a problem that wasn’t there. He was very honest about expectations, and I felt I was in very safe hands. The procedure itself was slick and fast. I had no bruising and felt back to normal around three weeks post-op. Post op care was great. I did have an accident 12 days after surgery, and Paul saw me again at very short notice to make sure everything was okay. Maria, his secretary, was also extremely helpful and quick to respond throughout. 9 weeks post op and I’m so relieved. My breathing and valve collapse is now so much better than it was before the surgery and I’m super grateful to have met Prof Chatrath. In addition to the improvement in my breathing, my nose actually looks stronger and more balanced too which is an unexpected bonus. The surgery has given me a massive quality of life improvement. A huge thank you to Paul and his team.

Appalling aftercare!! In as an overflow NHS patient. Had major surgery. Nurse refused the doctors requests in the morning. When discharged later that day the nurse still refused what the doctor asked for. The doctor had to be firm in saying what the nurse had to do as it was on the surgeons notes! The nurse reluctantly did it in the end but only half a job. The nurse left ouzing burn scars after removing dressing and didn't tell me until i put my clothes on and the material was catching on them. My husband got him back and he said "Yes i saw that!". Did nothing or aplogise. No empathy at all. I had 2 nurses come to my home that evening to sort out the burns and dressing on my surgical areas . Nightime was very little aftercare. Catheter was overflowing in the night. No one seemed to know what was going on in regards to your medical notes. Food was appalling dried up and burnt. No snack trolley inbetween meals. Awful experience. Couldn't wait to get out of there. Was I treated differently because I was in there last request as an overflow NHS patient. I was meant to be going to Birchington ward for my recovery. A complaint will be going in! The doctor said twice to have medication prescribed to the nurse and he would not do it so I came home with no painkillers and was told to go to a chemist after major surgery. Lack of care. No bedside manners.

We were fortunate to come across Ms. Shilpa Ojha at a time when we were seeking immediate and effective attention for our son’s recurring breathing and cold-related issues. From our very first interaction, we felt both heard and well guided. Ms. Ojha took a thoughtful and thorough approach to understanding the underlying cause of his symptoms, which led to the clear identification of enlarged adenoids as the root issue. What truly stood out was not only her clinical expertise, but also the promptness, clarity, and care with which she guided us through the next steps. Ms. Ojha herself performed our son’s adenoidectomy, and throughout the entire process, we felt confident, informed, and supported. Having consulted a couple of specialists prior to this, the difference in experience was striking—once under her care, we were able to move quickly from diagnosis to corrective action, all with our son’s best interests firmly at the centre. Our overall experience has been exceptional. Ms. Ojha combines deep medical expertise with a calm, compassionate, and highly professional manner that inspires trust. I would wholeheartedly recommend her to any parent seeking thoughtful, decisive, and expert care for their child.

I cannot rate the hospital highly enough following my recent operation. From the moment I arrived I was looked after by a number of staff members, all of who could not do enough to ensure I was comfortable, informed and had everything I needed. In particular nurses Damian, Sonia, Cindy and Salmon were wonderful, also the catering lady who's name i didn't catch, Steve the pharmacist, Mr Murray the anesthetist, and Mr Lewis the surgeon. All the staff were very friendly and relaxed which helped me settle in a situation I could have felt very uncomfortable and nervous in. Even though this procedure was covered by insurance I would not hesitate to self pay in the future if needed to have this level of care again.

I visited Dr Shaffer on recommendation from a fellow gym member as I developed lumps in both hands. My GP had advised me that they would not treat Dupytrens until my fingers actually began to contract. I had a 30 minute consultation at the Cromwell Hospital which resulted in advice to monitor my hands for 2 months to see if there was any deterioration. Very impressive service. Dr Shaffer was very clear that it was early in the condition. His advice to potentially ease off in the gym to avoid hand trauma was the not the best news for a gym addict! But clearly correct. I will now measure my hands movement and flexibility periodically and revisit if it shows signs of getting worse. Thank you

I saw Mr Hassan following my surgery in December, for excision of endometriosis lesions and polyps. I continue to be impressed by Mr Hassan's clear explanations, and his calm and reassuring bedside manner. His explanation of the findings of my surgery has assured me that the pain and symptoms I have experienced for over 30 years are real, and I felt listened to with both empathy and respect. Mr Hassan has provided me with a clear path for the next 2 years, and I feel reassured that if I experience any issues within that timeframe that I can reach out for a further consult. I would highly recommend Mr Hassan for anyone who is experiencing similar issues. My thanks to Mr Hassan.

I would highly recommend Skylight for anyone seeking an ND assessment. From the initial inquiry to the final report, the communication was exceptional—they explained every step of the process so I knew exactly what to expect. Key Highlights: Wait Times: The appointments ran perfectly on time, which I truly appreciated. Supportive Staff: They were patient with my questions and created a non-judgmental environment. Helpfulness: They provided clear next steps and resources that felt genuinely useful rather than generic. It’s clear they actually 'get' neurodivergence rather than just checking boxes

Myself being an inquisitive person had a look during the operation and questioned Dr Auplish who was willing to show and speak of the procedure. Since the operation, my scar is minimal hardly recognisable 8 weeks on. I no longer have pins and needles in my hand and arm and can enjoy a better nights sleep. (Carpal tunnel). I would not hesitate to return to Dr Auplish for further treatments if needed in the future.

I had a really positive experience with this pain management therapy service. From the first appointment, I felt listened to and taken seriously. The practitioner took the time to understand my symptoms, lifestyle, and history. Every session felt tailored to how I was describing the issues were. I’ve noticed a real improvement, not only in my pain levels but also in my mobility and overall day-to-day comfort. I also came away with practical advice and exercises to help manage things between sessions, which has made a big difference.

On arrival I was greeted by Dr Baldwin who apologised for being 20 minutes late on starting my appointment. We sat down and as soon as I informed him of my condition and concerns he became totally disconnected and kept looking at his watch. He eventually examined me and gave a diagnosis and but without any test I chose Mr Baldwin because on his Bupa page he stated he had a keen interest in oral infection ie mouth ulcers, what I experienced was the totally the opposite, I am now left getting a second opinion
