Mr. Nik Sharma is a Consultant Sports Knee Surgeon, specialising exclusively in knee surgery. Renowned for his compassionate and personable approach, he has developed expertise in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of knee-related conditions.
Knee conditions include all sports and soft-tissue injuries of the knee (ACL, multi-ligament, cartilage, meniscus), reconstructive knee surgery, patella (kneecap) pain and instability (giving-way), as well as the treatment of both early and late-stage knee arthritis. His key principles are in preserving the knee joint where possible and maintain function and quality of life for all patients. In cases where the knee joint is extremely worn out and joint preservation surgery is not possible, Mr. Sharma provides a variety of personalised knee replacement options to suit your needs (mini-partial knee, partial-knee, kneecap, full knee replacement).
Mr Sharma holds prestigious appointments at the internationally recognised Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) in Oswestry, one of the UK’s four specialised centres of excellence, and The Shrewsbury Nuffield Private Hospital. At RJAH, Mr. Sharma collaborates with a team of experts, staying at the cutting edge of medical advancements and innovation, and provides a super-specialist knee service such as advanced cartilage regeneration (stem-cells) and transplant surgery, meniscal transplants (new shock absorber), trochleoplasty (reshaping the knee), and osteotomy (realigning the knee). Mr. Sharma along with the team at RJAH, provides a tertiary referral service, where other knee surgeons around the country send patients for a specialist opinion.
Mr Sharma completed his specialist training in the esteemed Oswestry & Stoke rotation in the West Midlands and was later selected for the renowned Wrightington Sports Knee Fellowship, one of the most competitive programs in the field. His passion for sports injuries led him to further his education, earning the FIFA Diploma in Football Medicine and training in specialist centres of excellence in Canada (Dr Alan Getgood) and France (Dr Sonnery-Cottet). During this time, he honed his skills in treating professional athletes.
A passionate sports enthusiast, Mr Sharma has also served as a crowd doctor at high-profile sporting events, including ODI cricket at Lord’s, and the London Marathon, before running it himself in 2023! Having personally experienced and rehabilitated from a knee injury, he fully understands the psychological and physical challenges faced by athletes at all levels. This insight enables him to provide tailored, high-quality care, combining both surgical and non-surgical approaches to help patients from all different levels return to peak fitness and their day-to-day activity.
Nik Sharma is deeply committed to the education and training of future surgeons. As a faculty member for surgical exams and interview courses, he actively shapes the next generation of medical professionals. His dedication to research has led to numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, and he has shared his findings at both national and international conferences. Notably, he was awarded The Professor’s Medal for his pioneering research on a new classification system for patellofemoral (kneecap) instability.
Nik enjoys watching cricket, particularly the IPL, and is a season ticket holder for Wolves FC.
Mr Nik Sharma offers private consultations at the Shropshire Sports Knee Clinic, located at the Ludlow Unit in RJAH and Nuffield Shrewsbury.
