I met Mr Ramkumar for the first time in October 2025, after years of suffering with arthritis in both knees. I'd been asking my GP to refer me to an Orthopedic consultant for a number of years, but had been refused due to my age. After 2 years of steroid injections in my right knee and recently starting with them in my left knee, I begged for a referral. I was able to book the appointment via the NHS app and opted for Rivers due to the short waiting lists and the availability of an initial appointment the next week.
My first appointment at Rivers took no more than an hour, including an x-ray on both knees, to see the extent of the damage. My right knee was bone on bone and Mr Ramkumar commented on my bowed leg and permanent limp, he showed me the x-ray and said he'd put me on his waiting list for a total knee replacement. He confirmed the left knee, was not as bad as the right and would hold out for a few more years. I asked him if I should think about it and he said it was a no brainer and asked me why I'd come to see him - I said 'a new knee!' and he said he'd see me on surgery day! I was surprised to hear it could be as early as Jan/Feb 2026 and even more surprised when Rivers called me a few weeks later to ask if 6th January was ok!
I was very nervous because I know recovery from TKR can be tough and because despite the pain , you do have to push through and keep mobile so the knee doesn't stiffen and further surgery may be needed. However, Rivers prepare you well and Joint School was very helpful.
Mr Ramkumar came to see me the morning of surgery, which was much appreciated amd also after surgery, to check in. I only stayed one night and my flexion was 90° on discharge, which made me happy. The physio team took over for the next 6 weeks and Safar was amazing, so encouraging and supportive and my results were great. 130° bend by Week 4 and driving again!
My review with Mr Ramkumar was delayed by a few weeks, so I saw him today- 8 weeks post-op - to show him how well I am doing! Proud that I could walk in to his office without any aids, no limp, and standing tall. I could see he was happy and he took time to show me my x-rays, before and after, and checked the knee. I thanked him for accepting me as his patient, especially after being told time and time again that I was too young. I am grateful for the fantastic job he's done and making me feel like a middle aged woman, instead of an old lady!
I asled him to thank his secretary, Janet, as I'd emailed her a few times and she'd been very helpful.and responsive.
Mr Ramkumar is a lovely man, funny, kind and professional. He made me feel safe, listened to and cared for. I really hope he is still working when I need my left knee replaced!
Thank you, Mr Ramkumar and all the staff at Rivers, it has been a really positive experience and I appreciate you all.
