I was referred to the Horder Centre for hip surgery as an NHS patient and the difference between that experience and my experiences in NHS hospitals couldn't have been more different. As it turned out, I also had two brief stays in an NHS hospital at around the same time, and experiencing a busy trauma ward in the Royal Victoria hospital in Brighton was pretty terrible. Unusually, I ended up having to have two operations in Crowborough on the same hip, so I was there for several days in all, and though no one really wants to be in hospital they do make every effort to make your stay as comfortable as possible. You get a single room with a TV (Freeview) and your own en-suite bathroom and fresh towels are brought every day. For a start, the staffing levels were brilliant. Someone was always on hand if I needed pain relief or anything else for that mattter. For every staff shiftI was allocated a care worker and a nurse, all of whom were absolutely lovely. They will help you with anything including a bed-wash or shower and if you have any questions they can't answer themselves they will find someone who can. I was regularly offered pain medication and if I felt I needed some in between rounds I had only to ring the bell beside my bed and I was usually able to have it. The food is good and plentiful and the menu choices provide plenty of variety. The staff who bring round the food as well as a trolley offering hot drinks or fruit juice are cheerful and friendly as well as punctual. Even the housekeeping staff were lovely. Although I'm sure all the staff were busy (for example, the care assistants take care of 6 patients on each shift), no one ever seemed to be under too much pressure and they always had time for a chat. They will arrange transport two and from the hospital if you need it, whether in an ambulance or by car, and even the drivers love working there. Some of the staff I met have worked there for many years, which speaks for itself. If I were referred to the Horder Centre rather than an NHS hospital or further surgery at any point I would feel confident that I would be well taken care of.

I had severe haemorrhoid problems which had not cleared with over the counter medication or prescribed medication. Mr Leo identified the problem and attempted a banding to avoid intrusive surgery which was not successful and so a haemorrhoidectomy was preformed. There was a follow up as some skin tag and marginal inflammation occurred. Steroid treatment was prescribed and second follow up took place. The haemorrhoids were completely resolved as was the skin tag problem. The area concerned is now better than it has been in my lifetime. On each occasion Mr Leo was excellent in manner and explanation. His advice was based on excellent diagnosis and succinct. He sought to avoid unnecessary treatment and medication, but which in fact proved necessary. He was extremely efficient and speedy without being peremptory. All in all someone I would recommend for any colorectal issues.

As for his team of anaesthetist, his lovely nurse Kate Zimmerman and all the nurses and other stuff on the ward ( apologies that I don’t know all your names) that looked after me before and after my operation I send my sincere thanks and gratitude! Dana is incredible. I have now seen her in relation to two pregnancies, one which ended in a miscarriage, and one which gave me my beautiful baby boy. After a history of serious and complex medical issues and related anxiety, I needed to find an obstetrician who could provide both quality and comforting care suited to my needs - Dana provided both in spades. I was hugely appreciative of Dana’s kind and comforting care throughout both pregnancies. She cares so much for her patients and really goes above and beyond in all respects. She is also an excellent and thorough communicator, such that you feel well informed throughout her care, which was important to me to manage some of my anxieties. I can’t imagine having a baby with any other consultant.

I had a number of appointments to see Mr Warr at the Nuffield, and it was always administered well and on time. On the day of the surgery there was initially some confusion on which hospital room I was assigned to but that was cleared up fairly quickly - it was 7am so perhaps a beginning of shift handover issue. The nurses were caring, professional, attentive and very friendly before and after the operation. The anaesthetist visited and was very clear explaining the process, friendly and reassuring. A very good experience. I also appreciated that my parents could be with me before the operation as I'm quite young and not used to being in hospital. Overall a very good experience. Thank you.

Great service. Quick and efficient. The website doesn’t work that well on mobile but I was able to use the WhatsApp method and that was fine. Weirdly that prompted a call whereas by initiating communication via WhatsApp it was odd to get a call. I was struggling to hear clearly which is why I sent the WhatsApp. I’d imagine that I’m not unique in this 🤪. Not a complaint. Just worth noting. One other idea: has anyone asked to be able to watch what is being done on a screen? I personally would have enjoyed being able to do this. Don’t judge me!!! But if you made that available and publicised it, I reckon it could be a differentiator. Thanks for an efficient and thorough service x

I had to book a blood test after seeing a consultant and a follow up telephone appointment for the next week. I sat and waited 45 mins for my blood test and then had to go and ask at Reception how much longer I would have to wait. The original Receptionist who booked it had gone home. I was then seen within 10 minutes. Also follow up appointment had been booked as face to face when I specifically said “telephone appointment”. Luckily the consultant remembered he said to book telephone appointment and rang me at the specified time. Two mistakes by the same receptionist. Not good

My first port of call was to have a blood test. This was done in a highly professional manner and the level of care receive was exceptional. From there I was taken to the assessment nurse Rebekah. The whole experience was stress free and went really well. I felt cared for by all the staff. My only comment would be that I wasn't explained the after surgery process before going into theatre and after surgery I was sat in my room wondering what next steps were. ie would I see consultant again, how long before I could leave. It wasn't a big deal but a little more information would have been nice.
