A Life-Changing Experience – Thank You My wife is 62 years old and has battled alcoholism for 27 years. She had been to rehab three times before, but this time was different. After losing her mother – her last remaining close relative – she turned to alcohol once again, retreating from the world in her grief. As a family, we were at breaking point. In a desperate effort to keep a promise to her late mother, I kept her at home until the funeral so she could attend sober. It was one of the hardest challenges I’ve ever faced, but I managed it. Sadly, after the funeral, the drinking returned and we lost her to the bottle once more. When a small inheritance came through, I decided to try again. From the very first conversation, they understood exactly what we were going through. Addiction is not just the addict’s disease — it affects the whole family. They supported all of us, not just my wife. It’s now been four months, and I see a change in her I have never seen before. She is beginning to embrace sobriety in a genuine, lasting way. She speaks openly when she feels low or has a difficult day, instead of turning to the bottle. That openness has been life-changing for the whole family. I will always be grateful for their understanding, dedication, and wisdom. They didn’t just help my wife — they helped give our family hope again.

In theatre, I had to say I couldn’t open my eyes fully as the plastic covering placed over my eyes was rucked and digging into my previously operated rt. eye.. This was then corrected. A large amount of iodine was instilled to my left eye ( later discovered it was all in my hair ), and I said it felt so painful that I was sure my eye was not anaesthetised. I was then told I would have lots more anaesthetic drops which I believe happened. But I felt the eye speculum being put in and the sensation, not pain, of a tiny curved cut to the nose side of my eyes and then the sensation moved to the opposite side of my eye , where I had a sort of digging sensation, no pain, for a couple of seconds. No further discomforts or sensations felt, just extreme relief to be over the ordeal. However good communication throughout and attention paid to what I was experiencing. My eye was completely comfortable afterwards and my recovery was first class for which I am most grateful.

We feel so fortunate to have been able to have our daughter delivered at the Portland Hospital. Our room, the food, the care, everything was exceptional. Most of all we are grateful to the incredible midwives, who looked after us with such warmth and patience. We felt so safe in the knowledge that one of these incredible women was there around the clock to look after us and guide us through the early days and hours of our journey into parenthood. The various healthcare professionals (paediatrician, physio, lactation consultant, pharmacist) as well as the registrar who came to see us were all exceptional individuals too and it was incredibly helpful to be seen by all of them during our hospital stay. A special thank you goes to Pat, our amazing midwife, who accompanied us on the day of our birth. We couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful midwife to be with us on this incredible journey.

Once inside the building I was greeted promptly by the receptionist who was approachable and friendly. Wait time was a little longer than expected but staff did advise of this. Otherwise a very positive consultation experience. Being new to the hospital site, it wasn’t easy to locate SPH as signage tailed away aster the first o two. Car parking was poor - no spaces available on arrival and no indication given of alternatives.
