I have dedicated my training to achieve a high standard in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery.

I attended QMC (London University) to obtain a First class BSc(Hons) degree in Genetics, then completed my medical degree St Thomas’s and Guys hospitals, London in 1994 followed by a Masters degree at UCL, London. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in plastic surgery, FRCS(Plast), and I am listed on the GMC Specialist Register.

Two fellowships fine-tuned my training: a year at Toronto General/Mount Sinai Hospitals, Canada, specialising in Microsurgery, Breast Reconstruction and Head and Neck Surgery. A second fellowship in cosmetic surgery at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London.

As well as being the Head of Plastic Surgery and Clinical Lead in breast reconstruction at St Bartholomew’s and Royal London Hospitals, my specialist area is in procedures such as breast enlargement/reduction, breast symmetrisation, lipofilling, tummy-tuck, liposuction, body sculpting and corrective surgery after massive weight-loss. All of these I perform in my private and NHS practice.

I also run a clinic for the removal of skin lesions and more information can be found on this website ( and a discussion with my secretary, Nicola, 020 87097806.

I have a particular interest in women’s surgery and can dedicate an all women team to your surgical needs.

I have peer-review publications, co-authored book chapters and been invited to lecture at national and international meetings on a variety of topics in aesthetic and plastic surgery. Furthermore, I have raised over £8,000 for charity by taking part in bike races and climbing to the top of Kilimanjaro at 5895 metres. This was a wonderful experience as seen by the photo taken once we reached the top.

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is cosmetic surgery to improve the appearance of the abdomen. It can involve the removal of excess skin, fat or stretch marks. It also involves the tightening of connective tissue (fascia) in the abdomen, and stomach muscles. The purpose of a tummy tuck is to eliminate excess skin that cannot be removed through exercise, such as excess skin caused by pregnancy or considerable weight loss.

What does a tummy tuck involve?

This will largely depend on what type of tummy tuck you’re having. But, generally, it involves the plastic surgeon making incisions to remove most of the fat and skin between your belly button and pubic hair. This is done in a horizontal oval or elliptical shape. Your surgeon will then reposition your skin around the belly button. The belly button is brought out through a small incision and stitched in its normal position. The incision made between your hips above your pubic hair will then be stitched together, leaving a scar that goes along the natural crease within the bikini line. Some procedures may involve a tummy tuck with muscle repair, depending on the reason for the surgery. For example, women who experienced diastasis (horizontal separation of the abdominal muscles) after a pregnancy. Muscle repair tummy tucks involve the tightening of connective tissue with permanent stitches to bring the abdominal muscles together.

Different types of tummy tucks?

Full tummy tuck

This is the most common type of abdominoplasty where excess skin and fat is removed between your belly button and pubic hair. The remaining skin is then pulled tight together and stitched in place. A full tummy tuck leaves two scars. The first runs from hip to hip and the second around the belly button.

Mini tummy tuck

A mini tummy tuck involves one incision from hip to hip and the removal of excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen. The remaining skin is then pulled together and stitched in place, leaving one scar running from one hip to the other. Suitable for people with a small amount of excess skin.

Extended tummy tuck

An extended tummy tuck is similar to a full tummy tuck, but leaves a scar that extends further around the back of the patient. Suitable for people who have experienced massive weight loss.

What are tummy tuck side effects?

It is common to feel pain following surgery, which can be controlled through painkillers. Other side effects include temporary fluid-filled swelling above the scar, bruising, and a feeling that your tummy is being pulled, making it difficult for you to stand up straight.

What is the tummy tuck recovery like?

Tummy tuck recovery time takes between 4 to 6 weeks. During this time, you need to avoid driving, exercise, work, heavy lifting and going to the gym. You can start walking straight after the procedure, but you need to take care not to move in a way that can cause your wound to reopen, like quickly bending at the waist.

You’ll need to wear a pressure garment, or tummy-control pants during your recovery period to encourage the skin to heal and reduce swelling. After 6 weeks, you can stop wearing the garment and go back to your normal activities.

Is there a tummy tuck alternative?

There are a number of non surgical tummy tuck alternatives. These include: fat dissolving injections; sculpting devices that administer extreme cold to destroy fat cells; and, treatments that induce muscle contractions. Nonetheless, these solutions are not as effective as surgical tummy tucks and may be unsafe. So, it’s important to research these options thoroughly and consult a trained professional.
