i underwent a radical prostatectomy for a grade 2 c prostate carcinoma. using the da Vinci robotic system by Professor Greg Shaw. I found him to be easy to talk to and he explained my surgical and non surgical options at our first appointment. He gave me confidence and also explained the possible complications from surgery. I opted for the Robotic surgery which was expertly performed. The first post operative day I was sleepy but absolutely without discomfort. I live some distance from London and as a result I was given the option of a two night stay. The second day i did have a little discomfort to my upper back but it was easily resolved with paracetamol. I was warned by Prof Shaw that this would happen and it was due to the gas that was infused into the abdomen to help with visualisation of the prostate and to to reduce the bleeding. The mild discomfort was gone by day 4 and I was fully mobile by day 2. It is early days and the urinary catheter was removed just under a week ago and although I can feel he need to pass urine at night so I remain mostly dry the sensation has only returned a little during the day but every day is better than the previous one. In short the surgery for me was easy and the post operative course has been good. The urinary problems I was warned about and I feel sure it will be only a week further before I am dry. i would recommend Prof Shaw to you without hesitation he is a most pleasant gentleman and I have confidence in him both as a communicator and as a surgeon.

Tucked away, the clinic had a bright and airy interior. A warm welcome greeted me at the door and I was swiftly directed to reception. Unlike some medical waiting areas it felt comfortable and homely. I noted they had security was at the entrance, which was reassuring. A cheerful receptionist checked me in efficiently. The waiting area was pleasant, offering a variety of hot drinks including still and sparkling water, biscuits and snacks. I asked for a taxi on leaving and the lady at reception explained they didn’t have a direct telephone number, but would get a colleague to wave one down for me. Very thoughtful.

I have suffered a particular condition for over 5 months. Dr Batty is the first medical practitioner to give me confidence that he under stood the symptoms and believed he knew how to alleviate them. Within 5 mins he had arranged for x rays and within 15 had used them to explain what needed to be done and how. Within 5 days I had a further appointment and the agreed treatment. Throughout Dr Batty was patient, decisive and professional. He listens carefully and answers in detail and using terms that are understandable to the layman. When going in to get a third temporary crown I told Dr Koloutsos that I was not confident the crown would stay in place so was reconsidering my options. He was quite dismissive of this saying they are temporary crowns so are meant to come off easily. This comment was not appreciated. I finally did agree to have the full crown fitted but only after I was given a guarantee by Dr Koloutsos that if the crown falls off in the first year I would receive a full refund of the cost of the treatment.

The New Vic --- now known as the 'BUPA New Victoria' --- is a smallish but excellent private hospital situated just off the A3 between Wimbledon and Kingston. It has recently been enlarged and its large Reception is now most welcoming. So far as I know, the rooms are all of the ground floor and overlook well-maintained gardens. Surgical procedures that my family and I have had at the New Vic over the last thirty years have all been trouble-free and successful.

Unfortunately, the registration form I had completed online for the consultation seemed to have gone missing. The form that was presented had an address from over 30 years ago!! Not a good start, but thereafter things went smoothly. However, when an invoice recently arrived for a previous stress test and blood test, no account had been taken of the fact that I paid for the stress test on the day I took the test. Overall, there have been some administrative failings.

Very good. Friendly staff. Very clean and pleasant hospital. Health screening tests were done efficiently. GP decided to refer one issue to a specialist which was reassuring that it is receiving proper attention. Only minor irritant was that I was asked 3 times if I was insured or self pay. As I had pre-paid my health screening I would have expected that to be on my records.

Nurses were all keen to offer care, and talk, which I appreciated, it's easy to get in your own head, and I appreciated the distraction! One thing I would comment on is that there is always a long wait. I was asked to arrive at 8:30am, but I didn't actually have my procedure until 10:30, which gave lots of time to think. A more streamlined appointment process would be helpful
