What is Invisalign?

Invisalign are clear, removable moulds that allow you to slowly straighten your teeth. They offer a virtually invisible and discreet alternative to correcting misaligned and crooked teeth. Invisalign braces do not need any wires or brackets and are not as restrictive as metal braces.

Treatable cases for Invisalign

Invisalign can treat the most common orthodontic problems including:

  • Overbite – upper front teeth close in front of the lower teeth
  • Underbite – lower teeth go over the upper front teeth
  • Crossbite – upper front and lower teeth don’t line up
  • Gap teeth – extra spaces between teeth
  • Open Bite – upper and bottom teeth don’t meet
  • Crowded teeth – a lack of space in the jaw for teeth to fit normally
  • Baby and permanent teeth – early stage orthodontic treatment for growing children who have a mix of baby and adult teeth

People also choose to have Invisalign because they feel that their teeth need straightening so that they can have a more presentable smile. However, Invisalign may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who have severe orthodontic issues, such as severely rotated teeth. In which case, you need to consult an Invisalign dentist to check if you’re suitable.

How does Invisalign work?

The treatment starts with an Invisalign dentist taking a 3D digital scan of your teeth. Based on that scan, a customised, transparent Invisalign brace is made. You can start wearing Invisalign straight away and unlike braces, they can be taken off whenever you are eating or brushing your teeth. During the course of treatment, you will have regular check-ups with your Invisalign dentist to monitor progress. They will also give you a new set of aligners every few weeks.

How long does Invisalign take?

This depends on what kind of orthodontic problem you have and your specific needs. Generally speaking, Invisalign treatment can on average take between 12 to 18 months though you should be able to see your teeth begin to straighten within a few weeks.

What is Invisalign Lite?

Invisalign Lite is a shorter treatment that requires fewer aligners to correct minor orthodontic issues. Invisalign Lite specifically treats problems such as minor overcrowding, crooked front teeth, and crossbite. The treatment lasts between 6 and 7 months.

Does Invisalign hurt?

Invisalign doesn’t cause any pain, but you may feel some discomfort for the first few days after you get your aligner. This is due to the nature of orthodontic treatment in which the Invisalign braces apply gentle pressure on the teeth. The discomfort should go away as you get used to them and your teeth start to realign. You will experience some discomfort again every time you get a new aligner.

What are the alternatives to Invisalign?

Invisalign treatment can range from £1,500 to £5,000. There are some at-home (does not require in-person visits to a dentist) and in-office alternatives. These include Straight My Teeth, Smile Direct Club and ClearCorrect.
