I was referred to Newmedica Newcastle for eye cataract surgery by my optician. I had my first eye surgery done in September, and my second eye done in December. I received excellent service from all the Newmedica colleagues whenever I visited; for my pre-surgery consultation, the surgeries themselves, and the post-surgery visits. Those working on the reception were friendly and made me feel welcome. The waiting area was clean and tidy, with hot drinks available. The colleagues who did the testing, pre-surgery administration, and post-surgery follow up checks were all very knowledgeable. They took me through the surgery preparations, explaining the process as they went, putting me at ease and answering any questions. After surgery they made sure I was aware of what I needed to do over the following three weeks to ensure my eyes healed completely. The surgical team were very proficient, and I felt I was in safe hands. The procedure was explained at every step, putting me at ease. The consultant for my first procedure was Nicholas Wride. The procedure itself took just under 3 minutes, which I had not expected, as internet searches indicated it would take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. I was so impressed and, as I was told I could have the same consultant for the cataract removal procedure on my second eye, I didn’t hesitate to ask for Nicholas Wride again. My second procedure was equally as expertly performed, and this time took 3 minutes 20 seconds. There was no pain during the procedures and only very slight discomfort straight afterwards. Other than the pain relief eye drops that were put in for the surgical procedure, I didn’t need to take any painkillers at all. The hardest part for me was remembering to use the post-surgery eye drops the clinic provided, as my eyes felt that good. Three weeks after surgery, I attended the clinic for post-surgery follow up checks. I was signed off from the clinic after the follow up check on my second eye. My vision is now excellent, and I only need to use reading glasses for small print. Before the surgery I wore varifocal lens glasses at all times. I wasn’t expecting the improvements in my sight to be quite so good, so I’m pleased I took up the opportunity to have my cataracts removed and really pleased that it was Newmedica Newcastle who did the procedures and looked after me and my sight so well. This was my first colonoscopy procedure so I didn’t know what to expect and was quite anxious. Looking at the patient reviews on this site beforehand really helped me so I wanted to add my own comments here as well. The 2 day preparation for my late afternoon procedure (fasting and drinking the cleansing medication) was actually the worst part, however I followed the instructions and kept myself very hydrated throughout, that along with a couple of boiled sweets in the last couple of hours to stop the hunger pangs really helped. The clinic staff were all really friendly and helpful from the moment I arrived and talked me through the process throughout so I knew what to expect. I had sedation for the procedure itself which was completely painless, and I got the results quickly. At all times my wellbeing was prioritised by the staff, with 1 to 1 nursing and a very welcome drink and biscuit afterwards. Special thanks from me to Roberta and Dr Khan, and my aftercare nurse whose name I forgot (sorry!)

After my 1st consultation I left feeling a little despondent. Mr Mushtaq was quite negative, he didn't think he could help me, but he would try something. My MRI wasn't discussed and I was given little info about the procedure I was going to have, I naturally put this down to being an NHS referral. However my experience during my procedure couldn't be more different, the staff on the team were wonderful, they looked after me so well before and after my procedure, answered any questions and made me feel calm and happy. Mr Mushtaq was brilliant, he talked to me throughout my op and I felt secure in his hands. In my recent follow up appointment with him, he explained everything to me and answered my questions regarding my prognosis and how I should proceed. My overall experience at Pinehill is 5 star, I would definitely recommend it to others for spinal surgery.

Main reception lovely and consultant was great. Imaging receptionist was blunt and frankly dismissive. Now paying invoice for consultation the original price was quoted on phone I found it’s £20 more which isn’t much but when you are self funding every £20 counts! When I complained I was directed to the fees as outlined on my original appointment letter which state it would not exceed £150 which it obviously doesn't but it wasn’t explained that the figure quoted on phone was only an estimate. Pricing should be communicated more clearly for those who don’t have insurance. So far, apart from consultant, a disappointment.

Prof Chris Eden was all that I had been led to believe, understanding and sympathetic but wholly focused and professional. He explained the process and outlined the risks of the proposed surgery in clear layman's language that I could understand.. He did not sugar the pill! He carefully reviewed my medical history and identified several issues upon which he has requested additional investigation. I came away totally confident not only in his personal ability but also in the decisions that I have now made regarding my treatment plan. First impressions are very good.

Reason for the low rating on wait time is that I reported for admission at 1300 as requested but didn’t end up going to theatre until 2030. This was in part due to earlier procedures taking longer than expected but it was a very long time to wait and a long time to not eat. Perhaps a 3rd admission slot later in the afternoon would be a good improvement on busy days. But other than that everything else was very good.
