Mr Hughes review. I recently underwent major abdominal surgery at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary’s Hepatobiliary Pancreatic ward under the care of Mr Mike Hughes and I am delighted to have the opportunity to provide this review. From our first meeting in the outpatients department at ERI, Mr. Hughes was clear and direct in his explanation of my diagnosis, the available treatment options and the risks and implications of the proposed surgery. While my initial prognosis had been bleak, meeting Mr Hughes gave me the confidence to go ahead with surgery to remove a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumour. He demonstrated not only outstanding medical expertise but took time to listen to my concerns and explain each step of the process with patience and clarity. His calm, reassuring manor and understated, “all in a days work” approach made, what was a terrifying situation for both myself and my family, more bearable and helped me approach surgery with confidence. Immediately following my surgery, Dr Hughes took the time to personally contact my wife to update her on my condition and explain his findings which she very much appreciated. During my three week hospital stay, Mr Hughes was attentive and genuinely interested in my recovery, frequently calling in unannounced at varying times of the day and night, to the extent that I looked forward to seeing and chatting with him and I attribute much of my positive recovery to the friendly advice and reassurance he provided at every step of the way. As a family, we were impressed by his entire team and found everyone we encountered to have the same exceptional level of compassion and professionalism which we feel stems from the exemplary role model found in Mr Hughes. We are truly grateful for the exceptional level of care, expertise and support I received. My survival is undoubtedly down to the knowledge and skills of Mr Hughes and his surgical team. However, the extent of my recovery and return to near normal health is due to his ability to connect and communicate on a human level and his reassuring, approachable manner throughout what could have been an impossibly frightening experience.

Mr Jaspal Virdi

Having consulted two other urologists with a considerably overactive bladder (with a constant urge to urinate that caused considerable discomfort) and an enlarged prostrate, without much success, I was extremely grateful Mr Virdi was able to find a solution suited to me. He quickly identified the issue (an enlarged prostrate pressuring my bladder creating constant urge )and proposed a rezum steam ablation, something I’d never heard of. He was patient and understanding and explained the process in a quiet considered manner. He treated me as person, not as a procedure to complete. The procedure I was offered seems to be rarely offered by the NHS and I believe less invasive than other treatments. I feel that Mr Virdi would be perfectly suited to train others on the procedure, so that more patients could benefit. I was quite lucky to be referred to Rivers hospital at which he works. Whilst taking a while to return fully to normal (be patient), the constant urge and discomfort disappeared pretty much soon after. I no longer get up five times a night to urinate and I’m able to ejaculate normally for a 66 year old man. All in all I’m very happy

Professor Richard Field

This is my second hip replacement with Professor Field. My right hip was replaced two years ago and I had the left hip done this time. Professor Field is an excellent surgeon. I am amazed at my mobility, minimal swelling and minimal pain following surgery. The incision is small and very neatly sutured together. Professor Field carries out anterior hip replacements which means that muscles do not need to be cut and recovery is much quicker. Whereas other surgeons who do this procedure may have done hundreds, Professor Field has done thousands. He explains things well and every part of the treatment and recovery is science led. He pays a lot of attention to outcomes and his practice is based on this.

I recently had surgery for a double hernia, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. From the first consultation to the follow-up visit, my surgeon was clear, calm, and genuinely attentive. They explained the procedure in plain language, answered every question without rushing, and made sure I felt confident going into surgery. The operation itself went smoothly, and my recovery has been far easier than I expected. The incision sites were clean and precise, pain was well-managed, and the post-op guidance was thorough. It’s obvious they take real pride in their work and in their patients’ outcomes.

No problems with the medical teatment. Not sure why I was sent an invoice for medications some days after the treatment. It would have been much easier to pay in the hospital on the day. The invoice doesn't say if you can pay by card by phone or on line. This is a basic service these days. The menu offered for kosher food was limited and most of the items marked as being available weren't. If you're going to offer this service then you need to make sure you have available what you are offering - this is the private wing and one is paying for additional levels of service - not provided here.

I would advise any menopausal women who may need help to come to the Cora menopausal clinic. Emily was absolutely amazing from the moment I walked into her room and till when I left. The knowledge was out of this world. Emily reassured me and listened and understood. I took away so much from this one visit and am very thankful. My symptoms were getting to the stage where I was struggling to cope with everyday life. I’m a few weeks down the road and have been on HRT and feel so much better. Thank you Emily.

The Nuffield Hospital, Glasgow has an excellent team of nursing staff , physiotherapist and not forgetting the kitchen crew who served delicious nutritious meals with great menu choice. The nursing staff were there day and night to attend to any needs with care and attention. Physiotherapist were very knowledgeable in what to do, and more importantly what not to do, encouraging you with your exercise plan and pushing your boundaries to a speedier recovery.

My nurse had to queue for a very long time at the dispensary for my take away drugs whichdelayed my discharge unnecessarly. It was not her fault. I had surgery on my eyelids which by it's nature meant that I would have impated near vision for some days. I could not read the instructions for some days as my eyes were badly swolen due to the surgery. I just guessed. Why cannot the instructions be provided with lasrge print? Ralph T.
