What is Pelvic Pain?

Pelvic pain is pain that is felt below the bellybutton. The pain can be sharp, dull, come on very quickly or slow. Due to the importance of the structures in the pelvis i.e. the reproductive organs it is important for you to seek medical attention if you experience pelvic pain.

What are the causes for Pelvic Pain ?

There are many causes of pelvic pain. These include ovarian cysts, small fluid filled cysts that grow on the ovaries,, a sexually transmitted infection (STI), an ectopic pregnancy, where the foetus implants in the fallopian tube rather than the uterus, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), a urinary tract infection (UTI), appendicitis, peritonitis or even something simple such as constipation.

What are the symptoms of Pelvic Pain ?

The main symptom of pelvic pain can be anything from a dull ache to a debilitating agonising pain. Due to the wide range of causes of pelvic pain you may also experience other symptoms such as pain during sex, abnormal vaginal bleeding, burning on urination and sometimes even a fever.

How is Pelvic Pain treated?

Depending on what is causing your pelvic pain will determine what the treatment will be. For example an ovarian cyst or an ectopic pregnancy will need to be removed and hence are treated with surgery, similarly appendicitis will require the removal of the appendix via surgery. A simple UTI can be treated with antibiotics and constipation can be treated with diet, fluids and laxatives. Some of these conditions require immediate medical attention and can be life threatening if not treated quickly. So it is important that you see a specialist doctor or seek medical attention.
