    Mr Edward Westcott

    General Surgeon

    5.0

    Verified

I had 5 surgeries in Barcelona, where I nearly lost my life. It began with a really sharp pain in my abdomen, an emergency operation because there was sepsis and a perforation in my sigmoid colon. - a life threatening condition. The barcelona doctors closed the perforation, but, unfortunately, the colon started to leak. There was a buildup of fluid and a stone then dislodged itself from my gall bladder, which was extremely extremely painful. Another emergency operation took place. But, while in the OR, my vitals started to fail. Perhaps not knowing what to do, the doctors decided to stall for time, and put me in an induced coma for 5 days. Long story short, many things went wrong - i ended up losing my appendix, gall bladder, parts of my stomach (there was so much bleeding). There were 3 more procedures, but I survived. I left spain with a mesh in my abdomen, a colostomy bag, no core muscles in my abdomen (they had been moved to the side to accommodate the mesh), 30% less blood in my left leg (they had accidentally nicked my iliac artery), and a huge ulcer on my left foot (i spent 7 weeks in the hospital, most of it in the ICU, and i was not moved much). For most of the year, i rehabbed slowly. I learned how to live - survive, really - with a colostomy bag, and consulted with the best doctors in Manila on how to remove the colostomy bag (the procedure is called a reverse Hartmann), how to remove the mesh, and somehow restoring my core muscles. None of the top doctors consulted were comfortable preforming the reverse Hartmann. “Too many adhesions - it may take 8 hours before we get beyond the adhesions”, said one. “The reverse Hartmann is the most difficult procedure that a rectal surgeon can perform”. “Your intestines are all over the place, we may have a hard time recognizing things”. I had been through so many surgeries, the doctors were concerned that my innards were jumbled up. “We will need 2 operations, the reverse Hartmann, and the 2nd for the mesh”. The explanation was that the 1st was a “dirty” procedure, involving fecal matter, and that the 2nd was a clean procedure, that required everything to be clean to avoid infection. After a long search, and after weighing all options, I decided to have the surgery in London. Dr Edward Westcott performed the reverse Hartman on me at Princess Grace hospital in London on October, 2025. To my surprise, both procedures - reverse Hartman and mesh removal were done in one shot, contrary to what my other doctors had told me was possible. The whole procedure took 4 hours, and I was up and walking in 24hours. Best surprise was that I was able to regain control of my core muscles. The mesh in my abdomen had ripped apart my core and I had difficulty getting out of bed, or into cars, or walking up unsteady surfaces. Anything requiring good core muscles - I could not do. None of the doctors could tell me how my core would behave after surgery as there were few who had my problem - abdominal mesh, no core muscles, colostomy bag. Not only was the colostomy bag gone, I could now play sports and engage in regular activities like a regular human being. I am told that this was made possible due to some very recent advances & techniques - they injected my abdomen with Botox 6 weeks prior to surgery - to allow them to stretch my abdomen more during the operation. Then they used some new flexible bio mesh that allowed the doctors to join my core muscles together, yet stretch and move about. All in all I am very pleased and happy to recommend Dr Westcott to anyone in need of abdominal surgery. I won’t say my body is as good as before, but it is a damn better than anything I expected.

Everyone was at all times friendly and quietly efficient. I was assessed via up to five impressive machines on the working day following my initial approach to the clinic. I had to approach the Clinic following the retirement of the consultant whom I had originally engaged, and who had agreed with my optician that I was ready for surgery. The initial examination at the Clinic was most impressive, and when Mr Chan met me shortly thereafter he was clearly able to make a quick assessment. He explained to me that the operation would be challenging, given the damaged condition of my eye, but he agreed with my decision to ask him to proceed. The pamphlets provided enabled me to have a good understanding of the nature of a cataract and the usual course of treatment before and after the operation. On the day of the procedure I approached without misgivings, and following a full discussion with a senior nurse who sought fuller details of my medical history, and then the application of anaesthetics by the anaesthetist, I proceeded to the operating theatre. It was good and very reassuring to be able to feel the area round my eye go numb in advance of entering the theatre. The operation was for me comfortable, and I enjoyed the soft verbal exchanges between Mr Chan and his staff, and the gentle and futuristic sounds of the surgical equipment. Afterwards, I have felt no discomfort from the after effects, and the post operation advice from another nurse has been very clear and helpful. And I am delighted with the outcome. After having been in effect virtually blind in my right eye, my vision is now clear, bright and colourful. Very much better that these current aspects of by “good” left eye! Well done everyone! Dr Duncan provides exceptional care. He made us feel so safe, reassured and happy throughout the process, from the first appointment to the birth and beyond. We are so grateful that we can say we had a magical experience due to him, completely stress-free and enjoyable. He was always available for any questions big or small and gave clear and quick replies. Dr Duncan is a lovely person who clearly loves what he does, which alongside his incredible expertise and experience, provides such comfort. His team and particularly Colette are also so wonderful and go above and beyond to help with any requests. I had a very swift and pretty much pain- free recovery from my Caesarean and the healing of my scar has far exceeded even my most optimistic expectations, which is no doubt due to the expert hands and the great care Keith took during the op. We would not hesitate to sincerely recommend to anyone and hope to go through this journey again with Keith and his team.

I had an excellent experience at the Lindo Wing. Everyone (midwives, baby doctors, anaesthesiologists) were exceptionally calm, supportive, and reassuring throughout my stay. Every step was clearly explained, and all questions were answered with patience and care. Even with the smallest concern about my baby’s health, a neonatologist was promptly invited to carry out a full assessment, which gave me great peace of mind. I was also supported with my baby’s breast attachment immediately in the delivery room, which was incredibly helpful. The rooms are very well equipped, and during delivery both my and my baby’s heart rates were continuously monitored and carefully assessed. After the birth, we received ongoing guidance on next steps, and both my baby’s and my own health were checked frequently and thoroughly.

The physiotherapist seemed unconcerned by the pain I have been experiencing for nearly a year. He mentioned that I had full movement and so he was not concerned. He kept saying that he would not give me another steroid injection without acknowledging that I didn’t want one. He told me to do some exercises which he showed me how to do once and gave me no paperwork or YouTube link that might assist when I got home. I tried to ask how long I should wait before I made any further action and he said there is no more treatment. I felt like an inconvenience and wish I had gone somewhere else. I would never recommend anyone to see him again. He really made me feel small and insignificant.

I found the reception at ground floor level the only weakness as I was left standing feeling a bit aimless when no one else was at the desk and also I reported someone had been sick in a toilet sink and I was just letting them know, whilst I did not want gratitude for reporting it some greater acknowledgement and action might have been expected. Anyway most importantly Dr Woodland receptionist area and staff on his floor were excellent as they were for Dr Power.

9/10 My Sonographer Rima Shah was fantastic, professional and informative. To improve the service i think it would be nice if a cardiologists could quickly glance/look over results and give a brief written note/summary of results/heart health. It is a shame that in order to get a cardiologists insight/reassurance I then have to rebook and pay for an additional appointment.
