He gained his medical degree in 2001 from TN Dr. MGR Medical University in India before undertaking a diploma in chest diseases at Delhi University in 2004. He went on to complete medical training in Wales before relocating to London and training in respiratory medicine. In 2008, he was awarded a prize for the best newcomer trainee in his first year of Higher training and, in 2014, he gained his MRCP after completing respiratory training in the London and KSS Deanery. The same year, he joined Ashford and St Peter's hospital as a respiratory consultant. During this time, he was responsible for establishing multiple services including the ambulatory pleural service and medical thoracoscopy.
As the lead for respiratory medicine at the hospital, Dr Sharma led the response to the covid-19 pandemic and has gained particular expertise in acute and long-term covid. He also led the development of the trust covid management guidelines throughout the pandemic.
In 2017 and 2020, Dr Sharma games Clinical Excellence awards for his work.

Dr Sharma was really thorough and explained everything very clearly. He also asked me if I had anything else to discuss concerning my health which I did even though it was not what I went to see him about, it was lucky I did as it eventually led to me seeing another consultant ( Rheumotology ) and it was discovered that I had another issue going on. Thank you Dr Sharma for doing this and being so concerned about my eye issue.

On the whole, Dr. Sharma was professional, kind and attentive, explaining things as they arose and providing great detail - freely providing test results and relevant data to me each time over different appointments and conditions. I always felt kept in the loop. Not only did he go the extra mile but so did his PA.

Geriatric MedicineI have known Shashank for the past few years . Not only is he an excellent Respiratory Physician but his overall knowledge of Internal Medicine is wide. I have referred to him patients with complex Respiratory and medical issues as well as Long Covid Patients. Apart from his clinical skills he has a lot of empathy for his patients and is well liked by his patients.
