Mr Vikram Desai

Mr Desai is a senior Orthopaedic Surgeon working in the NHS as ell as providing private care for Elective Orthopaedic conditions. His early formative years were in Nottingham followed by a specialist Knee Fellowship at the prestigious Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Bristol.

He has a special interest in Joint Replacement icluding the Hip and the Knee. Furthermore, Arthroscopic Knee surgery with meniscal repair as well as meniscectomy and knee ligament surgery including reconstruction of ACL (Anteriro Cruciate Ligament) for adults as well a young patients. He also has considerable experience in various soft tissue knee problems such as patella instability and treatment of anterior knee pain syndrome.

On the knee arthroplasty front, he performs a high number of primary Hip and Knee replacements being the leading surgeon in his NHS trust. There is also a large tertiary referral from his colleagues regarding complex knee replacements and failed knee replacements. Further he has expertise in treatment of young patients with knee arthritis undertaking a significant number of unicompartmental knee replacements including medial UKR, lateral UKR and also patella-femoral replacements.

He performs several hip replacement operations for arthritis.

His results are available in the public domain for people to see and judge for themselves.

He is also very keenly involved in teaching and training from undergraduate medical students to junior doctors as well as registrars. He is an examiner for undergraduate final year medical students as well as for the FRCS orthopaedic examinations.

He is actively involved in research and has several publications in journals and has presented his work nationally and internationally. He is currently involved in various multi-centre trials and is the principle investigator in his Trust on these projects. These include trials on knee arthroplasty and ACL and outcomes on knee arthroplasty. He also regularly peer reviews research articles for 'The Knee' which is the premier journal for knee specialists.

Over the years he has been the Service Director of Trauma & Orthopaedics, Clinical Governance Lead, Mortality Lead, Transformation Lead within the Trauma and Orthopaedic Directorate. Mr Desai has introduced several new and innovative methods of imptoving patient outcomes as the clinical lead for elective transformation programme. He has been responsible for several innovations of healthcare in his trust including the development of enhanced care practitioner and Telehealth clinics. Further he is also the lead for Enhanced Recovery following Joint Replacement in his Trust.

He continues to play a significant role of being an Appraiser and hence plays a part in the revalidation of doctors. He is a part of the Royal College as an approved representative for a Consultant appointment in the country.
