I have been an NHS Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics since May 2003. My elective practice is solely upper limb conditions, and a good deal of the upper limb trauma that comes into the department. My interests lie in the development of arthroscopic procedures, and perform over 400 arthroscopic procedures each year, as well as maintaining the range of open approaches for various conditions around both the shoulder and elbow.
In 2010, I organised the teaching of the elbow module for the North West Deanery for the Higher Surgical trainees, lecturing on elbow arthroplasty and trauma.
In 2011, I was invited to join The Watanabe Club, a group of elite shoulder surgeons chosen from around the country, to teach both UK and international trainees skills in shoulder surgery. This teaching commitment is ongoing to date.
In 2013, I was invited to be part of the faculty on a new cadaveric training course on elbow arthroscopy. It remains the only cadaveric teaching course in the UK addressing arthroscopic techniques.
I became the Lead Clinician for Orthopaedic Trauma at UHSM, with the hospital becoming a Major Trauma Centre in the North West in April 2012, a post I held until August 2015. I was lead thru the recruitment process of 4 consultant colleagues, and all have proved their value to the Trust over their subsequent time in post.
I have trained an experienced physiotherapist to a standard where she can act as an Extended Role Practitioner in my clinics, providing valuable links with patients being treated in the out-patient settings, both following non-operative as well as post-operative courses of treatment. These therapists now work jointly in the Tier2 setting as well as secondary care, emphasizing the importance of a joined up care pathway to get the right patients to the right professionals for the right treatment at the optimal time. This maximizes efficiency of secondary care clinics, and thus allows improved better capacity planning for elective activity, has an effect on consultant job-planning and operating theatre requirements
As part of the Major Trauma Network for Greater Manchester, I represented orthopaedics on the MTC Governance Committee, and continue to be the sole reviewer of complex data submissions for TARN for Wythenshawe, notably for BOAST4 activity in orthoplastics provision.
During my tenure as Lead, we developed improved links with Primary Care, with discussions directly with CCGs involving pathways for delivering care for MSK, including Rheumatology, pain and MSK Orthopaedics.
Lastly, I became part of the core faculty on the Orthopaedic Diploma course in Upper Limb that runs through Salford University in Manchester, and held an Honorary Senior Lecturer post with the University.
