Dr Fakhar Khan is a Consultant Cardiologist, with a specialist interest in the management of patients with heart rhythm disorders. He is based at the Barts Heart Centre part of St Bartholomew's Hospital, one of the largest cardiovascular units in Europe, and at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead.
He gained his medical degree from the University of Cambridge in 1999. Subsequent to this, he pursued his training in General Medicine and Cardiology in Oxford, London and then Cambridge, at Papworth Hospital and Addenbrooke's Hospital. He then furthered his training in Canada, where Dr Khan was awarded the Mirium L Burnett Fellowship in Electrophysiology and Devices in Toronto, working with some of the leading experts in the field.
He has a strong research record, publishing many peer reviewed articles, and is an invited speaker at international conferences and meetings in the US and Europe. In addition to this, he has completed a Medical Doctorate at the University of Cambridge, where he led a major clinical trial on improving outcomes for patients needing cardiac resynchronization therapy. In recognition of his achievements he was awarded the Young Investigator Award in 2010 by the Heart Rhythm Society UK and the prestigious Ralph Noble Prize from the University of Cambridge for recognition of his outstanding work in clinical medicine.
In his current role, as a full time clinician, he regularly performs procedures for the treatment of heart rhythm disorders including the insertion of pacemakers, defibrillators, cardiac resynchronization therapy and all aspects of ablation therapy including the treatment of supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, and rhythm disorders in patients with adult congenital heart disease.
Dr Khan is passionate about patient centred care and makes a clear and comprehensive assessment of all patients. He takes the time to explain any tests or treatment and considers all alternative options ensuring that patients are fully informed and involved in all aspects of their care.
