About

Mr Roberto Casula was ppointed as Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Imperial College London NHS Trust in 2020.

Roberto has been an NHS Consultant Surgeon since appointed at Imperial College in 2001.

He is highly experienced in performing traditional and key-hole heart procedures and led successfully the Robotic Cardiac Surgical program at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington in 2003-2009 and following the relocation of the cardiac services to Hammersmith Hospital he started and has directed the Minimal access valves and revascularisation cardiac program at The Hammersmith Hospital from 2010 to date at Imperial College, London.

He was the first surgeon to perform robotic totally endoscopic minimally invasive heart procedures in the UK in 2003.

Mr Casula began his medical education in Italy graduating from Padova University Medical School in 1989. He then went on to train in the UK in cardiac, thoracic surgery and thoracic organs transplantation.

He is currently registered with the General Medical Council and is a fellow for the Royal College of Surgeons in England.

Over more than 20 years, he has consistently offered minimally invasive procedures to his patients such as coronary revascularisation, mitral, tricuspid valve repair and replacements, minimal access aortic valve replacements and minimal access surgical or hybrid atrial fibrillation ablation.

His work and achievenmsts extend beyond the UK, and has been invited as a visiting surgeon to many prestigious institutions in Milan, Bologna, Bari, Florence, Pisa, Udine, Athens, the Middle East and the West Indies to eprfoim and proctor other surgeons in minimal access and robotic opertaions.

He has performed over 7000 major cardiac surgeries.

He has a keen academic interest, being published by the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery regularly. His main research interests centre around new surgical technology and innovation, robotics and assessments of elderly frailty. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and a textbook on minimally invasive thoracic and cardiac surgery.

Mr Casula would be delighted to give a second opinion to those patients that have been told that traditional operations are the only course of action for their case since minimial access surgery could be in fact the most appropriate strategy for them.

Explanation

Thankfully there are not many times that you put one’s life into someone else’s hands that you have never met before, but this was going to be one those occasions for me. I needed to have a Mitral Valve repair and also a single bypass (LIMA). I was recommended to Mr Casula to have this done. It was a daunting prospect. I knew I had to have a Mitral Valve repair but Mr Casula wanted to check everything else out before he went ahead with the valve repair, which looking back was very sensible, if you’re going to get heart surgery lets make sure you only have to do this once. I then found out that I also needed a single bypass (LIMA) as well as the valve repair. Mr Casula is quietly spoken, very pleasant and confident. He had so much experience of doing these types of operations and I subsequently found out that everyone in the hospital seemed to know him and rated him very very highly. He explained what I needed doing in some detail, not that I wanted to know but in retrospect, I do think this was a good idea as you do need to know what to expect. The surgery went very well, and Mr Casula came to see me a few times after the operation which was very much appreciated. I was in hospital for 1 week but was on my feet and mobile within that time. If any friend or family needed heart surgery, I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Casula.
