Dr Sam Thomson

Dr Sam Thomson is an experienced Consultant Gastroenterologist and Consultant Hepatologist who delivers high-quality, patient-centred care for individuals experiencing digestive and liver conditions. Dr Thomson provides comprehensive consultations and diagnostic assessments for a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders. His clinical approach focuses on thorough investigation, compassionate communication, and tailored management plans that prioritise patient comfort and long-term well-being.

Dr Thomson completed his medical degree at the University of London in 2000. He subsequently undertook postgraduate general medical training before achieving Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 2003. He then completed higher specialist training in Gastroenterology, during which he conducted advanced clinical research into liver function and critical illness, earning a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of London. He was later elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.

Specialising in both general digestive diseases and complex liver health, Dr Thomson manages conditions such as chronic liver disease, liver cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, alcohol-related liver conditions, and general gastrointestinal disorders. He performs essential diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, colonoscopy, paracentesis for ascites management, and variceal screening and treatment. Working closely with multidisciplinary clinical teams and tertiary transplant units, Dr Thomson ensures that patients receive cohesive, individualised, and evidence-based care throughout their treatment journey.

In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr Thomson plays a key role in medical education and service improvement. As a dedicated Clinical Tutor, he leads the training, supervision, and mentorship of specialty doctors and junior medical trainees. He also actively participates in clinical research and service development initiatives aimed at expanding and enhancing digestive and liver care for the local community.
