He completed his specialist gastroenterology training in London at King’s College Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital. He spent six years working in the Liver Unit at King’s College Hospital caring for patients before and after liver transplantation. His research into survival characteristics of patients with end-stage liver disease was published and presented nationally and internationally.

Dr Austin has developed services in advanced endoscopy and hepatobiliary investigation at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust, where he established the endoscopic ultrasound service, Spyglass cholangioscopy, and enhanced sedation/anaesthetic endoscopy lists. He is currently Clinical Director of Abdominal Surgery and Medicine, which includes endoscopy, within the trust.

He has a strong interest in teaching and training, directing the annual South East Endoscopy Symposium and training doctors in advanced endoscopy both in the UK and internationally. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians, the British Society of Gastroenterology, the European Association for the Study of the Liver, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, and the Medical Defence Union.

I booked in a consultation after receiving awful care through the NHS and was given Dr Austin and what can I say. I have never felt more heard and seen by a doctor. Unfortunately upon arriving to my appointment I collapsed in the waiting room but I could not fault the staff for how they looked after me, ran tests and reassured my partner. Dr Austin came and spoke to me briefly once I recovered and arranged to call me the following evening to make a plan. He listened, asked questions and made a solid plan within 10 minutes, something the NHS hadn’t been able to do in 4 months! I highly recommend seeing him and getting the care you deserve

Very poor. I had my first meeting with Dr Austin on 14/10/25 where we had a discussion and agreed an investigation was needed. I didn’t have that done until 4/12/25. The nurses were very friendly and helpful. Dr Austin treated me like he had somewhere else he needed to be. Rude about the fact I can’t lay on my left side for long because I had half my lung removed a couple of years ago… I explained this and he told me “surely that’s the best way to lay “ in a very patronising way. When I left I was told I would hear by 1st January at the latest. I had to chase this for a couple of weeks trying to get hold of someone to speak to. Eventually I got an appointment on 16th January. I was told by Dr Austin the delay was probably his fault because he had been away gallivanting?? He gave me some details and said my gp would receive a copy ?? I wouldn’t need any treatment. To this day she hasn’t received the letter. As I need no further treatment I’ve not pushed for it. Having paid over £3,000 I feel very disappointed with my experience with private health .
