About Dr Mark Austin

Dr Mark Austin is a Consultant Gastroenterologist who sees private patients at The Montefiore Hospital, part of Spire Healthcare, and at Nuffield Health Haywards Heath Hospital. He also holds an NHS consultant post at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust, where he was appointed in 2010.

He specialises in gastroenterology, hepatology, and endoscopy. He undertakes all diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures including gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy, and is an accredited Bowel Cancer Screening colonoscopist. He performs advanced procedures such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), cholangioscopy, and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) to investigate the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts.

Dr Austin has a sub-specialty interest in hepatology, particularly alcohol-related liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). He also manages drug-induced liver injury, hepatitis, jaundice, and patients before and after liver transplantation. His expertise covers the investigation and management of a wide range of gastrointestinal problems including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), dietary sensitivity and food allergy, indigestion, heartburn, hiatus hernia, swallowing difficulties, diarrhoea, constipation, rectal bleeding, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

He completed his specialist gastroenterology training in London at King’s College Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital. He spent six years working in the Liver Unit at King’s College Hospital caring for patients before and after liver transplantation. His research into survival characteristics of patients with end-stage liver disease was published and presented nationally and internationally.

Dr Austin has developed services in advanced endoscopy and hepatobiliary investigation at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust, where he established the endoscopic ultrasound service, Spyglass cholangioscopy, and enhanced sedation/anaesthetic endoscopy lists. He is currently Clinical Director of Abdominal Surgery and Medicine, which includes endoscopy, within the trust.

He has a strong interest in teaching and training, directing the annual South East Endoscopy Symposium and training doctors in advanced endoscopy both in the UK and internationally. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians, the British Society of Gastroenterology, the European Association for the Study of the Liver, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, and the Medical Defence Union.

Dr Austin was extremely helpful and understanding of my gut issues. He guided me through the options available to me in terms of both medication and possible treatments and procedures. We talked through the possibilities available to me but there was no pressure applied on Dr Austin's part. Just some recommendations and suggestions that I found very useful. I felt completely at ease in what could have been a stressful situation.

Following my initial consultation, Dr Austin performed a gastroscopy which identified erosive gastritis. Dr Austin has been clear, concise and succinct in his questioning and responses. Further tests are underway in relation to another abdominal issue and I am hopeful that will be dealt with equally easily.
