Professor Athol Wells

Professor Athol Wells is a distinguished chest physician, currently serving as a consultant at Royal Brompton Hospital. He specialises in diffuse lung disease, including expertise in areas such as lung fibrosis, autoimmune disorders, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, lung scarring disorders, and all forms of sarcoidosis.

Beyond his clinical practice, Professor Wells is an accomplished researcher with numerous interests in diffuse lung disease, such as studying new therapies and investigating the structure and function of the disease. He is frequently invited to speak at major conferences worldwide, including the American Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society.

In addition to his research, Professor Wells is also a respected member of several professional groups and chairs the British Thoracic Society group revising diffuse lung disease guidelines. He sits on the American Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society group revising idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis guidelines, as well as several other joint groups defining guidelines for conditions such as non-specific interstitial pneumonia, smoking-related diffuse lung disease, and acute exacerbations of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Professor Wells is widely recognized for his contributions to the field, with numerous publications and advisory board memberships. He is on the advisory board of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and Thorax and is the principal or co-editor of three books on his specialist interests.
