About Mr William Garrett

Mr Garrett specialises in the assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment of a range of abdominal conditions but especially gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary (gallstones and gallbladder surgery) and colorectal disorders. He has extensive experience in upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. He is a fully accredited Bowel Cancer Screening Specialist and Clinical Lead for Bowel Cancer Screening at Medway NHS Foundation Trust as well as Clinical Director for the entire West Kent and Medway Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. He holds 5 Clinical Excellence Awards in the NHS.

Where a surgical intervention is required, Mr Garrett favours minimally invasive (keyhole or laparoscopic) approaches wherever possible and has tailored his training to mirror this interest, having spent a two-year fellowship at the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit at Guildford. This provided valuable exposure to the latest laparoscopic treatments performed by experts from all over the world.

He also has a special interest in hernia surgery and has extensive operative experience in laparoscopic hernia repairs. He co-wrote the submission to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) on behalf of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland in 2003 which, when taken into consideration with evidence from other organisations, led to a change in the guidance on the use of laparoscopic surgery for inguinal hernia repair.
