Mr Shaw Somers

Mr Shaw Somers is a Consultant Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon based part-time at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. The remainder of his clinical time is spent in London.

He completed his specialist surgical training in Leeds, London and Hong Kong. He was made an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong in 1995 before being appointed as a consultant specialist surgeon in 1996.

Mr Somers has a specialist interest in oesophageal disorders and stomach surgery. He had pioneered many keyhole (laparoscopic) procedures and has developed new techniques for managing failed or complicated Bariatric procedures.

He founded and directed the upper gastro-intestinal unit at Portsmouth Hospital. He also developed one of the most successful practices of Obesity Surgery in the South of England. He has performed over 4000 bariatric procedures and his specialist team carries out over 500 of these per year. He is also one of the few surgeons in the UK that will regularly carry out complex and ‘revision' bariatric surgery.

He is a past-President of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (2017-19) and a Council Member for the Association of Upper GI Surgeons.
