Consultant General & Upper GI Surgeon
Specialist in Hernia, Gallbladder & Acid Reflux Surgery
Croydon University Hospital | HCA London Bridge | Shirley Oaks | Blackheath
🩺 About Me
I am a Consultant Surgeon with specialist expertise in general surgery, upper gastrointestinal (GI) conditions, keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery, and complex hernias. I treat both NHS and private patients across South London and Central London.
I lead the Upper GI surgery service at Croydon University Hospital, where I’ve developed dedicated pathways for managing gallstones, reflux, and complex abdominal wall hernias. The multidiscplinary team process I established for Abdominal Wall Reconstruction manages patients from throughout London, the South East and across the country, who have complicated abdominal hernisa of all types.
Many of my procedures are performed using minimally invasive (keyhole) techniques. However, I always take a patient-centred approach, tailoring treatment to each individual.

Mr Rhys Thomas provides professional and clear communication, ensuring patients feel confident throughout their treatment journey. He offers detailed explanations of procedures such as inguinal hernia repair, umbilical hernia repair, and gallbladder removal, including what to expect for recovery and post-operative care. Patients report smooth procedures, effective pain management, and a quicker recovery than anticipated, with minimal scarring. Many patients also praise his skill in keyhole surgery.
At initial consultation Mr Thomas identified the problem and clearly explained the proposed procedure in a friendly and professional manner. Prior to the operation he explained what would take place in the operation including the entry points and process of a laparoscopic procedure. My experience of the post operation recovery was as expected and uneventful. At the operation follow up visit Mr Thomas explained some points about the operation again in a friendly and professional manner.
I had an umbilical hernia procedure with Dr Thomas and was extremely happy with the medical attention that I received. Dr Thomas was extremely professional and did an amazing job.....no scarring and no infection. He was also very clear in terms of explaining what he intended to fo beforehand so that a layman like myself could understand. Thank you so much Dr Thomas and the whole of your team.
Consultant was very good in explaining the surgery details and provided me with the information required and made me comfortable for the procedure.
Very well organised and executed procedure. No hiccups, all went to plan. A very high quality of service in all aspects.
Was seen on time with an open smile. I was examined and was given confidence that all is as good as it was expected.
Mr Thomas is a highly skilled, empathetic doctor with excellent communication skills. He listened to my problem & explained clearly the reasons for the bulge in my upper abdomen. He treated me as a person& I left confident in his professional skills.
Mr Thomas was very clear and easy to understand and was pleasant to talk to. My initial consultation and subsequent treatment when very smoothly. I experienced pretty much exactly what Mr Thomas had told me I would. My pain was well managed at the beginning and has faded very quickly. Over all first class.
I had my second inguinal hernia surgery on 14th Feb 2026 with Mr. Thomas. I had been slightly nervous since apart from it being the second time (different side) I was also 12 years older. But from the first meeting Mr Thomas put me at great ease, we discussed what options are available and how we could proceed. We agreed upon an open / general surgery with a mesh. The surgery was booked promptly and went very well and to be honest I am still a bit surprised how little pain I had whereby I didn't even need to take the strong opioids and managed almost with paracetamol. The recovery also has been much faster than last time and overall I am really elated with the outcome.
I had a Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair which was fully explained by Dr. Thomas. Everything from the advantages to possible side effects/after care was broken down so I understood it in its entirety. He made me feel very confident that the procedure would go well even though I was fairly nervous about hospitals and surgery in general.
Highly skilled, thoughtful, and a great colleague. I trust Mr. Thomas implicitly to provide a balanced view and the highest standard of care for every patient I refer to him.
