Mr. Matthew Bowles completed his initial medical training from St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London in 1986 and then undertook surgical training in London and South East England. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) and was then awarded a Master of Surgery (MS) degree from London University in 1999 for his research into small bowel transplantation.
Having trained in general surgery, hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery and liver transplantation, in 2001 Mr. Bowles was appointed as consultant liver transplant surgeon at King's College Hospital, London, one of seven liver transplant units in the UK.
In 2009 Mr. Bowles and his family moved to Devon, where he was appointed as a consultant HPB/general surgeon at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. Here, he switched his focus from transplantation to cancer surgery and also started to treat many more patients with gallstones and hernias, both as emergencies and non-emergencies; broadening his scope of practice in surgery.
Mr. Bowles is a passionate educator and since 2014 he has been the Director of Medical Education at Derriford. He has been an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons for many years, recently being appointed as an assessor for examinations.
