About

I am a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon based at the Belfast Trust and works at Belfast City Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital and Mater Hospital. I consult privately at the Ulster Independent Clinic.

I have been a Consultant Surgeon since 2005 and I have an busy and established schedule at Belfast Trust and at Ulster Independent Clinic. I, working with other specialties, provide a holistic service for patients suffering from colorectal conditions. Examples of conditions I manage include colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, functional bowel disorders, bowel cancer screening, familial bowel cancer syndromes, piles (haemorrhoids), peri-anal conditions (abscess, fistulae). I offer both open and laparosocpic (key-hole) surgerical approaches. My private practice mirrors my NHS practice.

I am an accomplished endoscopist offering both diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy. My caecal intubation rate is over 95% with an intention to treat. Furthermore, I also offer advanced therapeutic colonoscopy such as endoscopic mucosal resection of polyps, endoscopy tattooing, endoscopic clips placement, chromo-endoscopy, narrow-band imaging, argon plasma coagulation for radiation proctitis and colonoscopic stenting (with radiologist).

Belfast City Hospital Cancer Centre provides services as the Regional Cancer Centre for Northern Ireland. It was completed in December 2005 at a cost of £57 million the centre was opened to patients on 17th March 2006.

As the regional Uro- and Gynae-oncological Centre at Belfast City Hospital, I work closely with my urology and gynaecology colleagues discussing and jointly operating on complex pelvic cases. Appropriate patients can be referred on to the Oncology Services based at the Regional Cancer Centre.

I am heavily involved in the teaching and training of junior surgical staff. I was involved in the selection of surgical trainees (SHOs/Registrars) organised by the School of Surgery. I am also one of the Foundation doctor clinical supervisors and responsible for overseeing training for junior doctors at Belfast Trust. We also provide training for 3 Surgical Registrars working at the Gastrointestinal Unit. Our Unit has been very popular with the senior surgical trainees.

In 2014, I was nominated by our surgical trainees for my contribution in delivering excellence in teaching and training, an example of the type of comment we received from our trainees about my teaching was "Mr Lee instils confidence in the trainee as well as giving succinct direction...his mannerisms and habits both in clinic and on the ward are examples that I am keen to incorporate into my practice when I have the opportunity to practice independently."

A certificate of recognition was awarded for my contribution to postgraduate medical education.
